Is it awful to pick a name everyone hates because we like it?
Not pregnant yet bit theoretical conversation about
Illyana
Arianna
Ellianna
Lillianna

Not for quads obviously Lol

For boys were liked
Malachi
Zachariah
Xavier

Are they really that bad?

highinthesky Mon 20-Mar-17 01:26:30

DSis had her heart set on Ariana but caved to her bastard of a partner and named her something similar as a compromise.

We call her Anna anyway! Amongst lots of other cute NNs.

MiniMaxi Mon 20-Mar-17 01:42:56

Does everyone hate those names?! I like pretty much all of them. I personally wouldn't spell Eliana or Liliana with double L's or N's though.

I thought the "universally hated on MN" names were Kai and Lily-Mae ?!

PS call your kid whatever you like! Within reason... Maybe not Adolf.

Awwlookatmybabyspider Mon 20-Mar-17 01:46:59

I don't think there's any names that everyone hates. We all have varied opinions, and Thank God we do. Itd be boring if we all had the same name.
With the exception of Zachariah. You're names are gorgeous

GreyDey Mon 20-Mar-17 01:47:32

They are pretty awful yes hmm

ErrolTheDragon Mon 20-Mar-17 01:47:59

Illyana and Ariana are very nice. The other two sound a bit like Ellie-Anna, Lily-Anna maybe, but they're ok.

The boy's names... personally not keen on OT prophet names, but with nicknames Mal and Zach those two are ok. Xavier... its a bit marmite, but not dreadful.

MommaGee Mon 20-Mar-17 03:05:52

Ok so not EVERYONE just LOTS of people. Got told Malachi was a goblin and Xavier would get beaten up for his name

mini I might have got carried away with l's and n's haha. Liliana is a compromise on Lilleth which is vetoed by DH. Malakai would have ended up as Kai

MommaGee Mon 20-Mar-17 03:06:54

greyday out of interest what are your top boot and girl names?

Toobloodytired Mon 20-Mar-17 03:48:21

I like basic normal names, not a fan of giving my child a name that may hinder their chances at a job simply because they rock up to an interview introducing themselves as crystal! hmm

CakeRattleandRoll Mon 20-Mar-17 05:50:07

I like Eliana and Liliana, but agree they are better without all the double letters. And I like Xavier from your boy's list.

None of them are what I would have considered 'generally disliked names', though.

Sophronia Mon 20-Mar-17 06:42:10

They're nice spelled Ariana, Eliana, Liliana and Ileana. I like all the boys names, especially Zachariah.

Reow Mon 20-Mar-17 06:47:33

If you like them then use them. whatever name you pick someone else is going to hate it.

I like Xavier. Xavier Bardem!

NashvilleQueen Mon 20-Mar-17 06:50:11

Ariana is a nice name but at the moment almost exclusively linked to Ariana Grande so everyone will assume that's your motivation. If you're happy with that then go for it.

CactusFred Mon 20-Mar-17 06:58:22

I know an Oriana which fits in with your list. I like it. The girls names on the list are worse than the boys ones. The boys ones are actually 'proper' names not made up ones.

None of the names are awful though.

LadyOfTheCanyon Mon 20-Mar-17 07:06:58

I admit I do an inward eye roll with almost any name that isn't fairly plain as it just seems a bit try hard to me. But I'm a grumpy shit and no-one has to listen to me thankfully
I agree all the excess Ls and Ns looks like you didn't know when enough was a good thing.
I also think that diminutives will ALWAYS out. I know a few people who insist that their child is called Andrew/Primrose/Zachariah etc and they without exception get called Andy/Rose/Zach by their peers. So make sure you're happy with Arrie and Ellie because that's what will happen. <gavel>

Heathen4Hire Mon 20-Mar-17 07:10:38

Oriana is a P&O cruiser and Illyana reminds me of Italian coffee.

I like Zachary! Xavier is a bit too posh and Malachi...nope.

BlackSlateFloor Mon 20-Mar-17 07:12:58

I like them all - favourites are Ariana and Xavier.

None of them will affect their job chances imo.

crapfatbanana Mon 20-Mar-17 07:20:40

Don't tell anyone your name choices until you've named the baby.

My mum was scathing about our name choices but we used them anyway. She admitted recently that she loves the names now and likes telling everyone them!

For what it's worth I like your name choices, particularly the boys'.

SuperBeagle Mon 20-Mar-17 07:36:57

The spelling of the girls names bother me.

Illyana is probably fine, but I just don't like it.

Ariana, Eliana and Liliana are how the others should be spelt. I like Liliana (very pretty - there was a girl when I was in primary school named this and I was forever envious), but not the others.

Zachariah is a bit too Bible Belt America. Zachary is more well-rounded. smile

Malachi is quite common among Pacific Islanders here, so it brings up a certain image for me. Not a bad thing, of course, but it's a strong association.

Xavier is lovely. I've known a few. The only issue is the pronunciation. Zay-vee-er or Ex-ay-vee-er.

BikeRunSki Mon 20-Mar-17 07:43:24

I don't really like any of your girls names, but I love all your boys names. There's one of each at DS's Cubs!

MommaGee Mon 20-Mar-17 08:53:44

Just my family then, thaws reassuring 😄

1horatio Mon 20-Mar-17 09:31:10

Arianna: I like it
Ellianna: Eliana was on my list for DC2... (and is now one the middle name list for that child). Yes, I like the name
Lillianna: I really like Liliana ^

Zachariah: I love this name.

So, yeah... Everybody hates them? hmm

It's probably really kust your family, yes.

Sugarpiehoneyeye Mon 20-Mar-17 09:46:42

Love your boys names, and like Arianna.

PenelopeFlintstone Mon 20-Mar-17 09:57:20

If you put two Ns in Ariana, people will pronounce it Ari-anna instead of Ari-arna.

Pencilvester Mon 20-Mar-17 10:04:42

Xavier would get beaten up for his name

Kids are much more accepting and less violent than you think. Plenty of kids have unusual names and no-one bats an eyelid.
