Would you assume it's short for Maxwell or Maximilian?

DH and I both love 'Max' but agree it needs to be a bit longer on the birth certificate - but we can't decide whether it should be Maxwell or Maximilian and I'm curious to hear the MN consensus...

I wouldn't assume either one to be honest. Could be either.

OneSecondAfter Wed 08-Mar-17 18:16:57

I personally prefer Maximilian though.

soupmaker Wed 08-Mar-17 18:17:25

I'd assume just Max.

Ontopofthesunset Wed 08-Mar-17 18:18:06

I'd assume just Max. I think Max is a name in its own right as well as an abbreviation.

HerRoyalNotness Wed 08-Mar-17 18:18:31

The only one I know is maximus. But I would assume just max if that is what child was introduced as

Sugarcoma Wed 08-Mar-17 18:18:56

Thanks - and just to add, for those who wouldn't make an assumption - which do you prefer?

ClaryIsTheBest Wed 08-Mar-17 18:19:13

My nephew is Max, just Max, he is a super cool 19 year old!

I was offered the choice by the registrar. I went for Max on the BC as I wasn't sure everyone would be able to spell Maximilian etc.

organixeveryday Wed 08-Mar-17 18:20:51

And now he's called Maki Roll, Salmon Maki, Maximus ,Maxine And Maxy.

BikeRunSki Wed 08-Mar-17 18:20:57

Neither. I know 2 Maxes, who are just Max.

There's a Maxwell and a Max in DS's reception class. The 'Max' is short for Maximilian, but always shorted to Max. Maxwell is known by his full name. If you're only going to call him by the shortened version, it doesn't matter which you choose, but if you're thinking of using his full name much then I personally would go for Maxwell.

Maxim! That's my favourite long version. But whichever you go for, I love the name Max smile

Bakedappleflavour Wed 08-Mar-17 18:28:35

I have a Max and he's just Max smile

That1950sMum Wed 08-Mar-17 18:29:12

I'd assume it was just Max which I love. It reminds me of the boy in Where the Wild Tings Are.

I really don't like Maxwell. Maximus is cool!

DizzyDigestive Wed 08-Mar-17 18:31:22

I'd assume just Max, but I personally prefer Maxwell.

Jooni Wed 08-Mar-17 18:36:15

IMO Max works fine on its own. My favourite longer forms are Maxim and Maximilian. All fab names!

Jooni Wed 08-Mar-17 18:36:33

I quite like Maximus too actually

MrsBungle Wed 08-Mar-17 18:37:35

My uncle is a Max but his real name is Malachy.

SummerHouse Wed 08-Mar-17 18:38:02

I like just max.

DartmoorDoughnut Wed 08-Mar-17 18:39:23

It makes me think of my amazing uncle who was called Max, christened Maxwell, a very kind and incredibly intelligent man

Allthebestnamesareused Wed 08-Mar-17 18:41:01

My ds is a just Max!

I don't like Maxwell or Maximillian.

SallyGinnamon Wed 08-Mar-17 18:43:56

Just Max.

If pushed, Maximilian. Definitely not Maxwell. It's a surname.

Montsti Wed 08-Mar-17 18:46:42

I'd assume (& hope) Maximilian as I love that name. Really not keen on Maxwell. Personally I prefer longer names on the birth certificate but, in this case I do think you can carry off Max on its own...
