I'm not allowed Maud or Dorothy.

What names do you love that your partner (or mum etc) wouldn't go for?

I wanted Gulliver or Ramona. DH was a firm nope. He wanted Poppy, which was a veto from me.

DH wanted Penelope or Roberta. The first sounded silly with the surname. I wasn't sure about the second.

I wanted Alexandra or Laura. DH said no Sad

When I was pregnant, I fell for the name Magnus, which my husband vetoed despite thinking it was 'a cool name' because he was worried it might be 'too much to live up to'.

Luckily we had a girl!

Why are you letting your mum veto a name?

It's between you and your dh that's it

Anyone else's opinion doesn't matter

Ha, my DH has many, many prejudices and rules about naming children!

He thinks 'flower' names for girls are weird and wrong. So Lily, Rose, Poppy etc, he doesn't think are proper names for a person. I think Heather is ok, as it is more Scottish. Hmm

He also doesn't like names that are commonly used as surnames. Eg Fraser, Murray.

More than one middle name is 'pretentious'.

If it's not a traditional Scottish name, it's 'a bit too posh'.

With every birth announcement from our friends, I will tell him the name and wait for his reaction. It's almost always disparaging!

But it's his nature to be deeply suspicious of anything new. If I get something new for the house, or even new clothing, he will humph and give it the side-eye for about a fortnight, then tell me how lovely it is.

We already have acceptable names picked out for DC4 due this September, as the thought of naming negotiations while very hormonal was unthinkable.

I'm glad DH vetoed a lot of mine. Looking back at the list I was clearly hormonal Grin

Eggs I agree about hormonal choices: I actually picked names for a girl and a boy before I ever got pregnant, with all of them! I have been stuck with an unusual name which I blame on my mum's hormones, so am determined to make my choices before that is an issue!

Not sure anyone has let their mum veto, Soubriquet I was just adding that in as an example of an opinion who may be valued outside of other halves (and the dad might not be around).

Too many to name them all, but:

Caspar
Wilfred
Ezekiel
Rowan
Eli
Rufus

Annabel
Alice
Ariadne
Persephone
Verity
Serena

I vetoed Megan

He vetoed:
Zoe
Stevie (full name...)
Aria
Hera
Gaia

Looking back I was clearly hormonal as the only one of my choices I think was even remotely a good idea was Zoe..DD could definitely have been a Zoe...

I know a Caoimhe..... great if you live on the Emerald Isle but not such a good idea where no one can pronounce it.

My DH vetoed Alec

I vetoed Flora - it reminded me too much of margarine.

Report
Meluzyna · 27/02/2017 20:56

Oh, and the other reason I vetoed Flora was that my best friend's DD was called Laura...... just too close to my ears.

I vetoed Hector.

I think DH was fairly easy about it, he agreed pretty much to my name choices.

Delilah and Pearl vetoed by Dh, didn't matter in the end as we had a boy

Report
kel1234 · 27/02/2017 21:02

We didn't want to know the sex. I really liked and wanted Jessica for a girl (middle name would have been Helen, and our surname starts with S, so I thought it would go and was fine- not like it spelt anything rude or that)
But not one other person liked it.
We had a boy, so it didn't matter. But we are having another in a few years and I still want Jessica for a girl, but not one else does.

Dh vetoed Dylan, as then it was a considered to be a very Welsh name (gee live in deepest, darkest England). Then Catherine Zeta Jones named her son Dylan, and it became fairly mainstream and popular.

I liked Arthur and Alice, both after grandparents, but they were vetoed due to a disliked colleague and an ex-girlfriend. I vetoed Felix because I hope not to give birth to a cat.

He has vetoed Artemis. I have vetoed April and Lesley. Lesley! What is he thinking?! Baby due soon. We might just let DD choose!

I vetoed Jessica - I had hyperemisis and all I could hear was the word "sick" in the middle.

He vetoed Cleo - couldn't get past the Renault Clio association.
