Is Aspen too out there?

I really love the name Aspen - just concerned it's going to be met with negativity.

Also like

Audrey
Harper
Sienna
Scarlett
Cora

And a bunch of others but keep coming back to this one!

What's the general consensus?

I really like it!
No weird spellings so no struggling to pronounce it. I say go for it!
Also love sienna though

SoleBizzz · 24/02/2017 13:29

I like that name Aspen! ! Is it posh?

wishcarry · 24/02/2017 13:32

I love the name aspen.

elQuintoConyo · 24/02/2017 13:34

Love it! It's really pretty.

But... Please ignore anyone who says '...you could shorten it to Assy or Penny or...' etc.

MadisonAvenue · 24/02/2017 13:34

It's really lovely!

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 13:35

Yeah DH said he thought it might be 'posh' but I think it's just different. My brother has a kid called Mason and Aspen has a similar sound to that really.

I really like it. It's quirky but beautiful. Also the Aspen tree is known for surviving in all conditions which is a good strong trait for a daughter I think!

Oh I'm so glad people like the name!

Bluntness100 · 24/02/2017 13:36

I'm sorry it just makes me think ski resort.

runninglikemad · 24/02/2017 13:37

I immediately thought - girl or boy? It is a bit American imo.

It's nice I guess but she will get funny looks all of her life and people repeating it with a quizzical look.

squishee · 24/02/2017 13:41

Isn't Aspen a ski resort in the US? It sounds posh American. Leaves me a bit meh.

Cora is a Continental hypermarket chain.

I like the other options. I think Audrey is more appealing since Twin Peaks (new season coming this year too).

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 13:42

It is American. That doesn't bother me as I'm Irish.

I think there will be an element of "oh that's an unusual name" to it but I think more and more people are picking less standard names so she would be in good company!

I'm aware of the ski resort but that link doesn't bother me either.

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 13:44

Aspen is actually the name of the tree though. The resort is also named after the tree.

Not familiar with Twin Peaks so don't know that particular character.

Posh doesn't bother me either. DH and I are lawyers so everyone we know has posh names.

What about Ashten?

jhjhj · 24/02/2017 13:55

It does make me think of skiing but that's not really a bad thing!

Too American for me to use personally but a very pretty name for a girl.

Isadora2007 · 24/02/2017 13:57

Exh wanted that for our dd 16 years ago. We decided against it but only because we had DS already with a more "normal" name so wanted a similar known girls name.
I still like it though. Go for it.

WhyOhWine · 24/02/2017 13:59

I know an Aspen. She was always known as Aspie when she was tiny, but now that she has been diagnosed as having ASD, they are trying just to use Aspen!

Chottie · 24/02/2017 13:59

I thought Aspen was a boy's name?

WhyOhWine · 24/02/2017 14:00

i also know an Arden. Suits her.

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 14:03

Ooh Arden - I like it. Although still quite out there 🙂

Not keen on Ashten as it's very similar to Ashton which is a boys name- but thank you for the suggestion.

I think Aspen can be a boys name too but is more commonly associated with girls. I can't picture it as a boys name really.

Didn't they go to Aspen in Dumb and Dumber

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 14:06

They did indeed. But that film is 22 years old so I don't think it will affect her school life much!

I'm a bit confused by your thread. You said in your OP that you're asking because you're worried about the name being met with negativity, but then every time somebody has made a negative comment, you've said "I don't care about that".

So if you love the name, and you actually don't care about the potential negativity (which is certainly how it seems), then you should just use it!

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 24/02/2017 14:13

Thanks red - I'm using the thread to find out what the main negative responses are to reassure myself about the name.

Generally the consensus is that it's a pretty name and the majority of people liked it. The negatives were It sounds posh. It's an American ski resort. It was featured in dumb and dumber and it might be confused as a boys name. Not that it sounds terrible.

That's what I was after. I just need to balance the two against each other.

Thanks for the comments ladies
