What do people think of Alwen as a girl's middle name. It's a nod to my beloved Grandad who is Welsh and called Alwyn.

I think it's fairly easy to pronounce? Not too confusing?!

Alwen, is lovely imo. Use it!

I like Arwen more, personally, but I do think Alwen is a lovely way to honour your dear granddad. Smile

Keep with your granddad's spelling of Alwyn. It's much prettier.

Jooni · 23/02/2017 13:37

I like it. Reminds me of Arwen and Anwen, both of which are beautiful. Lovely tribute too, use it!

Lovely.
But use Alwen, not Alwyn (which is a male name, due to -wyn ending).

Gummibears · 23/02/2017 17:51

Lovely name

crapfatbanana · 23/02/2017 17:56

Very nice. I also like Olwen and Anwen.

JujuMonster · 23/02/2017 20:25

Love it! I know a very nice Alwen so it has a good association for me

Alwen is not uncommon in Wales, as a female version of Alwyn, or particularly in North Wales after a little mountain tarn called Llyn Alwen.

I've also known an Alwenna, but I prefer Alwen.

Just emphasise that it's a short a - don't let people call her Ahl-wen or All-wen with the sound of the English word 'all'.

When she's of an age to go, you could take her to see her lake!

Thanks for all the lovely comments. What a lovely idea to take her to the lake one day too! X

I'd definitely think Alwyn is a Boy's name. I'd never heard of Alwen until this thread (despite 30+ years in Wales). Difficult to go wrong with it unless people use a long A.
