Saw this name the other day and have no idea how to pronounce it. I need to know as I may meet her soon. Is it Lisa? Louise? Leesha?

Cloeycat Sun 19-Feb-17 14:32:11

It's pronounced Leesha

Coulibri Sun 19-Feb-17 14:32:25

More or less Leesha, but the final sound is a schwa, so more LEE-shuh.

No idea I'm afraid but the Irish county Laois is pronounced Leesh as far as I'm aware - if that's any help!

CorporalNobbyNobbs Sun 19-Feb-17 14:34:00

Yeah what Coulibri said. LEE-shuh

OurBlanche Sun 19-Feb-17 14:35:34

LEE shuh here too!

llangennith Sun 19-Feb-17 14:37:06

Well I was totally stumped!

carabos Sun 19-Feb-17 14:42:53

Thank you!

CorporalNobbyNobbs Sun 19-Feb-17 14:43:01

Alternative spelling is Laoighse pronounced the same

Coulibri Sun 19-Feb-17 14:45:37

The vowel cluster 'aoi' in Irish is pronounced, roughly, 'ee', e.g. Aoife, Laois, aois, Aoine, daoine.

Lee-shuh is correct however my friend Laoise has always just pronounced like Leesha.

So is Saoise pronounced Seesha? I always thought it was Sorsha! Like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

CorporalNobbyNobbs Sun 19-Feb-17 16:15:35

No as Saoirse has an 'r' smile so it's Seer-shuh or thereabouts.

WaitrosePigeon Sun 19-Feb-17 16:16:09

Absolutely no idea.

Poorlybabysickday Sun 19-Feb-17 16:18:03

So how do you pronounce Aoife? I have always wondered that blush

CorporalNobbyNobbs Sun 19-Feb-17 16:22:08

Ee-fuh. More or less. It's hard to write the 'e' sound it's kind of half way between 'fa' and 'fuh'

BobbinThreadbare123 Sun 19-Feb-17 16:27:29

Aoife is ee-fa

lorelairoryemily Sun 19-Feb-17 16:41:31

Leesha, eefa, Seersha

Poorlybabysickday Sun 19-Feb-17 17:44:37

Gosh in my head I have always pronounced Aoife as Aowifee grin shock

TheElephantofSurprise Sun 19-Feb-17 17:47:03
