Hi everyone, would love your opinions on these two please. Current shortlist is -

Matilda (Mattie)
And Imogen

Having trawled the Internet for inspiration incase we missed any other dh has decided he likes Evelyn (to be pronounced ever-lyn). I'm not keen on Evie though and thinking people might naturally shorten it to that?

Also remembered Meredith which I think is lovely (probably shortened to Meri) but I don't know any at all (other than from the murder case which isn't the best association) and I'm quite a 'safe' person generally. Son has a fairly common, traditional name and I'm not sure it goes?

There aren't many girls NOT called Evelyn round here.

Love Meredith. Not so keen on Evelyn just because there are different ways of pronouncing it and you will be forever correcting people

RuthB4 Sun 19-Feb-17 08:07:33

Ooh I love both Evelyn and Meredith! I don't think Meredith is that uncommon so you shouldn't worry about it not going with your son's name. I think Evie is a lovely nn for Evelyn, but it's got to sit right with you of course.

jinglebellmel Sun 19-Feb-17 08:09:03

Ah okay sorrel, I'd rather steer clear of too popular, so that's another mark against it!

Strawberry yes that is also a consideration, not overly keen on the alternative pronounciation.

Jooni Sun 19-Feb-17 08:10:42

I like both. Meredith may be uncommon but it's a well-known, traditional name. Meri is very sweet!

cariboo Sun 19-Feb-17 08:14:36

I love Imogen! That name was my first choice for DD but it doesn't work well in French.

jinglebellmel Sun 19-Feb-17 08:26:01

Great thanks everyone, nice to have some positive responses smile

Also love Tabitha but dh says it's a cat name, so that one is out! I don't think I love Evelyn but may add Meredith to the short list.

Meredith is gorgeous.

MadameJosephine Sun 19-Feb-17 08:29:28

Meredith is beautiful, my favourite of all your names. I do like Evelyn but only pronounced Ever-Lynn so I wouldn't use it as correcting all the time would get annoying.

How about Miranda? Another gorgeous name and I don't think I've ever met a baby Miranda

Mouthfulofquiz Sun 19-Feb-17 08:32:02

What about Tamsin / Tamsyn?

jinglebellmel Sun 19-Feb-17 08:37:27

Thanks Madame and mouth- both nice names but just don't do anything for me if you know what I mean? It's strange how some give you a kind of 'feeling' and other equally nice names don't.

Also wondering about Meryn?? But I'm supposed to be shortlisting not adding to the list!

MollyHuaCha Sun 19-Feb-17 08:43:23

Meredith is lovely. I like Imogen too.

WutheringFrights Sun 19-Feb-17 08:44:42

I have a Meredith - six weeks after she was born another family in our village also named their baby Meredith - they share a middle name too.

When she was born my Dad said she'll go far with that name - it's a good strong name grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Sun 19-Feb-17 08:47:37

The Meri I know is a Meriel.

I'd have the same reservation about Evelyn (the Eev-lyn I know is male).

Imstickingwiththisone Sun 19-Feb-17 08:48:31

Love Meredith and Imogen but the latter seems to be getting more popular all the time.

HainaultViaNewburyPark Sun 19-Feb-17 08:48:53

I have a 12 year old Evelyn. She shortens it to Ally. It does seem to have become much more popular as a name - it was outside the top 100 when I named her.

celtiethree Sun 19-Feb-17 08:50:32

Meredith is lovely and as a pp said, what about Merryn??

HainaultViaNewburyPark Sun 19-Feb-17 08:52:00

Meant to add that my 3 year old niece is called Imogen. It's at least as popular a name as Evelyn - I'd say more popular. If that bothers you.

jinglebellmel Sun 19-Feb-17 09:05:29

Thank you everyone. I think Imogen is slightly less popular than Evelyn according to ons, but not much in it (especially if it keeps moving up). It doesn't bother me too much, my sons name is much more popular I'd imagine, although I don't know any others I'd say it must be at least top 20. I think I'm just not totally sold on Evelyn and making excuses to dh!

Really like Merryn too.

EggsEleven Sun 19-Feb-17 09:32:55

I really like Meredith and Merryn. Also Imogen. Not keen on Evelyn due to the numerous ways of pronouncing it and it's unlikely that everyone will pronounce it the was you want. It also has the potential to be shortened to Evie which I don't like

Sapphireshadow Sun 19-Feb-17 09:43:03

I really like Merryn.

Sugarpiehoneyeye Sun 19-Feb-17 09:44:41

Meredith is beautiful. I do like Merryn also.
Tabitha is very nice.

smileygrapefruit Sun 19-Feb-17 09:48:50

I have a 1 yr old Meredith. I love it. Haven't met another yet but get compliments on her name all the time. I have had a couple of hmm looks too though.

lilyborderterrier Sun 19-Feb-17 09:52:38

Meredith is lovely
