My husband and I are going to be having a baby this year. We haven't found outage gender but like Iona for a girl. Our surname is Woodland.

Does Iona Woodland sound silly because the surname is a noun?

Yes, sorry.

Treewall Sun 12-Feb-17 21:14:49

Yes, it's ridiculous. Sorry.

A little... sorry, sounds like you've just purchased a small forest sad

blueskyinmarch Sun 12-Feb-17 21:15:35

I guess it is slightly strange - I own a woodland? I do like Iona though.

SavoyCabbage Sun 12-Feb-17 21:15:39

Yes, yes it does sound sillly.

omnishamblesssssssssssssss Sun 12-Feb-17 21:15:46

Slightly daft. Iona is lovely though. Naomi and Hermione sound similar.

Wolfiefan Sun 12-Feb-17 21:16:03

I own a woodland.
Yes. Weird.

ClusterFuckTadpole Sun 12-Feb-17 21:16:11

I own a woodland?
That's what it'll be on the playground!

Cakingbad Sun 12-Feb-17 21:16:49

How about Ivor for a boy?

reuset Sun 12-Feb-17 21:17:30

Do you?

Choose something else! grin

Wheredidallthejaffacakesgo Sun 12-Feb-17 21:17:31

I own a woodland too. Is what she'll hear time and time again.

I love the name Iona, and you have a great surname, but I think it's just one of those classic mismatches.

doyouthinkso Sun 12-Feb-17 21:19:19

Try Ilona? (ill-o-na) is that any better

mrswoodland Sun 12-Feb-17 21:21:43

Thanks for the feedback. After a name that is not extremely common like Isla is but a name that isn't too difficult to spell. Hermione is beautiful but a bit too posh!

Piffpaffpoff Sun 12-Feb-17 21:22:06

We discounted Iona for the same reason because our surname is a place and it just sounded odd. We also had to lose Isla as it sounded like Isle of (location). Also gone were names that were also places (Angus, Lewis, Harris etc) because when out together with our surname it sounded like part of an address! Sigh.

Piffpaffpoff Sun 12-Feb-17 21:23:10

-put- together, not out together!

Prettybaffled Sun 12-Feb-17 21:25:31

I agree with everyone else. What about Fiona?

MalibuSeafood Sun 12-Feb-17 21:26:12

The Italian name 'Ilaria' is a pretty alternative if you fancied something similar.

How about Laura as a middle name?
Iona Laura Woodland sounds even better.

mininionsteve Sun 12-Feb-17 21:35:34

How about Diona, one letter difference and no forest purchases. Does it need to go with any other names?

Sugarpiehoneyeye Sun 12-Feb-17 21:37:05

Alana Woodland
Elena Woodland
Ivana Woodland

It should be gorgeous. Iona is lovely. At least your surname isn't Island

Womble75 Sun 12-Feb-17 22:03:48

I went to school with an Iona Ford. Poor girl never heard the end of it. So for that reason I wouldn't although it is a lovely name

HarmlessChap Sun 12-Feb-17 22:04:11

Unless convention changes, she will likely also not want to from relationships that might lead to marriage with men who have a noun for a surname.

Who would want to be :-
Iona Ford
Iona House
Iona Cage
Iona Field
Iona Stone
Iona Guppy
Iona Castle

and so on

As an aside a friend who's surname is Fish nearly called his daughter Courtney......
