Baby names

Eleanor, Vera or Nina?

Very common surname so would prefer something not so popular as a first name.
I like all three but my big shadow of doubt is telling me Eleanor is very popular, Vera is an old granny's name and Nina is too twee.

Don't know the sex yet but for boys I like names like Matthew and Hamish, although can't use them, so suggestions there very welcome too!

I love Eleanor, also Helena. Personally, I'm not keen on Vera or Nina.
How about Ellen or Isla.

Sugar love the boy names, especially Struan! What would that get as a nickname? Stru?!

I hate Vera but like the other two options. Out of the two I would probably pick NIna.

I always liked Nina and Mina. Vera is cute and it makes me this of Audrey as well?

Nina. It's got a bit of spark to it. Not twee at all.

Eleanor is dull and Vera is just awful.

These are LOVELY. Nina is my favourite - what Serena as a full name? Then if she decides it's twee she can be Serena.

I love Eleanor but don't like Ellie.

Vera is a name dear to my heart (great Aunt) but not sure if I like it or not, if that makes sense.

Nina out of those 3.

I don't think Nina is twee at all. It's a solid, well known, but lesser used name (only 267 baby girls called Nina in England & Wales last year). I also have a soft spot for Vera, but would have the same concerns as you.

I'd avoid Eleanor if you were concerned about popularity, as there are a lot of 'El' names in the top 100 right now (not just Eleanor, but Ella, Ellie, Elsie, etc).

Glad people seem to like Nina! Yes I think it's all the El.... nicknames that are putting me off Eleanor. Our surname is really common so there is a real risk of someone having exactly the same name if we plump for a popular first name. My name is very uncommon and I really like that on FB, LinkedIn etc I'm one of only a handful.
Other girls names I like are Fiona and Elspeth (but less so), for boys I also like Isaac nn zac, Harry and most of the Fin-something names, although am put off them again because of their popularity!

Serena is really nice too, thanks! What other names could be nn Nina?

Nina is a nick name for Christina/Kristina.
I really like Fiona and Finola, also Harry.

I knew an old lady called Vera. I don't like the name itself but her nn was Ve which I find really cute.

Eleanor is boring, sorry, and Nina is not pretty.

Eleanor though I prefer Eleanora. Noor could be a nice nickname to use of you want to avoid the currently over popular Ellie or Ella. Elle is another nice alternative

I kinda like Vera and retro names are in

None is okay but my least favourite of the free

Nina is definitely my favourite from those 3, very cute name

Eleanor is stylish but would probably be shortened eventually, which would be an issue if you dislike Ellie or El.

Nina is great and not twee at all.

Vera is short for Veronica. I think Veronica is really pretty. NN Vee is nice too. (Vera is not so great)

Nina is lovely, not twee at all.

The only thing that puts me off Eleanor is the ubiquitous El... nicknames, as others have said.

I don't like Vera at all.
