WE DON'T AGREE ON ANYTHING!

Husband and I recently found out we are having a girl - very happy and excited BUT can not think of ANY names we agree on. We had a boys name sorted, no problem at all but for some reason choosing a girls name is driving us round the bend.

My top;
Tabitha
Ophelia
Aurora
Arietty

His;
Lizzie
Olive

I hate his, he hates mine. We are both very picky on what we don't like - I dislike place names, names that are too popular (love Evie but know FIVE newborns already for example Sad, love Sophia but know three) he doesn't like what he considers 'American-ised' names like Braylon, Miley, Riley, Cadence etc. Neither of us like names like Hope, Faith, I don't like very modern names, he dislikes very old fashioned names.. it's exhausting!!

I'm scared we'll never pick one or that we will but one of us will hate it! Can you think of any names we might like?! Or is this an impossible task and we should just call her little L forever!? StarFlowersBear

I wish I knew the answer as we are going through exactly the same thing!

Have you both written a list and cross checked it to see if there is anything that you would both consider or one that is 'ok' and then focus on looking at names that are similar to possibly find one you really like?

Something fairly unusual, but not OTT then?

Claire, Helena, Ingrid, Louisa, Marguerite, Nancy, Phoebe, Rebecca, Sarah, Tara, Verity?

I can't quite get the hang of either of your styles, as I think Lizzie is very different from Olive in his list, and your list... has Arietty on it.

What do you call 'modern' and what does he call 'very old-fashioned', as there's often considerable overlap between the two?

Would Olivia, Clara or Laura be a crossover point for the two of you?

Ooh, actually, what was your boy's name? That might give a clue to things you DO both like.

Otherwise, yes, Elle is a perfectly good name :P

but Lizzie and Olive are both very old fashioned??

I suggest buying a baby book, and going through it with 2 coloured pens. (one colour each) put a tick next to names you like and a question mark next to names you would consider.
That should give you some overlap somewhere.

When I was pregnant with dd1, dh really wanted her to have a Dutch name (he is Dutch) but I am English and we lived in a Russian speaking country, so the name had to work in 3 languages and 3 cultures. We had a dutch name baby book, and every name I lliked her would say - Oh no, very old fashioned in Holland nowadays, or similar.
No names with G or TH or SH. No Grace/Hope etc, no flower names, and so it went on. We both like Bible names but some of them are never used in Holland, or pronounced very differently, so Naomi off limits and so on and so on.

Then one Friday I was told I had to be induced on Monday. (at 38 weeks)
We sat in bed with the baby book and literally went through name by name. I found one I hadn't seen before, and I loved it, and it had a shortening which is very common in UK. Dh thought about it, it is a rarely used but distinctly Dutch name, and he sort of went ...Hmmm....maybe....hmm.... that's quite nice....hmmm.... YES I love it. It was about 2 am, and she had a name.

Well I really like Tabitha and Arrietty from your list and Olive from his, so there is cross-over somewhere!

You seem to like slightly longer and frillier names than him, but both quite vintagey and unusual.

Juliet
Olivet
Ariane
Lyra
Luna
Esther
Penelope
Louisa
Jemima
Autumn
Beatrix
Etta

Can I just say 'so what?' about the knowing the Evie's and Sophia's already? Are you likely to socialise with them forever?

Olive is sort of vintagey so is there anything from this list that's frilly as well? 1930s names What about Audrey, Iris, Helena, Gloria, Rita, Nina?

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!

I actually really like Luxe and it's on my list of names!!

I know I might not know the Evie's and Sophia's forever but I really don't like the idea of going with a super popular name Confusedmy parents picked a popular name for me and I hated that at school in my class we had to be X F or X with glasses, X with the short hair etc. I used to be jealous of the girls with unique names! I still remember one called India and I used to wish it was my name because there was only one in the whole school! Imagine being one of five girls with the same name in your class SadSad

The idea of going through a book with different coloured pens is brilliant! xxx

Evelina with the nickname Evie? Or Genevieve nn Evie? That way you can call her Evie, or you can call her another nickname, or the full name.

Would you agree on Elizabeth nn Lizzie?
