We have made a first list of boys names which we will eventually want to whittle down to 2-3. We are Welsh and live in Wales so some are Welsh names. Which do you like best? Popularity isn't really a consideration for us so we don't mind if it's one of the top names we just want something we both like.

Cai
Caian
Caio
Eli
Elias
Harri
Ifan (Ee-fan)
Luca
Lucas
Madoc
Noah
Rhydian
William

How do you pronounce the second name on your list? The Irish name Cian is on ours, Kee-an.

lucieloos Wed 11-Jan-17 11:18:35

It's more like Kye-an.

LOVE Caio, Ifan and Rhydian

Really over Noah now, but also like Gwydion, Efan and Ioan

MollyHuaCha Wed 11-Jan-17 11:32:02

William for me.

lucieloos Wed 11-Jan-17 11:39:00

How about Harri?

MarmiteDoesYouGood Wed 11-Jan-17 11:43:52

I like Eli, Elias, Luca and Lucas. The rest not so much.

Staranise123 Wed 11-Jan-17 11:48:49

Really like Caio! Looks and sounds cool and I've never met anyone with that name.

Agree that Noah is overused

Isadora2007 Wed 11-Jan-17 11:51:10

Harris sounds lovely in Welsh. But I'd get annoyed when most people spelt it with a Y

I like Luca and Ifan off your list best.

HearTheThunderRoar Wed 11-Jan-17 11:53:56

I much prefer it spelt Harry, Harri imo looks a bit silly, as does Ifan, why not spelt it Ethan? Either name they are going to have a life time correcting the spelling.

My favourites are Elias and Eli. (Eli is my ds's nickname)

Caio, Caian and Cai look made up to me, sorry. I do like the name Kane though, if that's any use...

Rhydian i like but it makes me think of the classical singer who won the X factor several years ago.

The rest I'm not fond of but they are perfectly fine names.

I think the point of spelling it Ifan is that it is a Welsh name, OP is Welsh and lives in Wales and would like a Welsh name!

Ifan is pronounced EE-fan, so a different sound to Ethan.

Not sure about Ciaian as wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

Ifan is definitely my favourite. I had Gwydian and Ifan on my list if we'd have had a DS. Gwydian as in Gwydian Gwynn from The Snow Spider (by Jenny Nimmo)

AllTheLight Wed 11-Jan-17 12:06:26

My favourites are Cai, Ifan and William.

Dolwar Wed 11-Jan-17 12:06:58

Ifan and Ethan are different names so she can't just swap one for the other.

How about Iwan? Ieuan? Twm? Iestyn? I like Madoc.

lucieloos Wed 11-Jan-17 12:13:59

Hearthethunder, the reason for spelling them that way is that we are Welsh and that's the way they are spelt in Welsh so we would rather go with that than the English versions!

NickyEds Wed 11-Jan-17 12:15:32

Elias and Eli are my favourites. I also like Oshan/Osian which is Welsh I think. There are loads of Noahs around my ds's age (3). Harri would just have a lifetime of saying "it's Harry with an i"!

MarmiteDoesYouGood Wed 11-Jan-17 12:26:41

Harri would just have a lifetime of saying "it's Harry with an i"!

Even then I'd be like "So it's.... Hirry?"

lucieloos Wed 11-Jan-17 12:29:16

I don't mind correcting the spelling there are loads of names out there that need to be spelt. Some of our girls names have different ways of spelling so that wouldn't put me off.

GreenTureen Wed 11-Jan-17 12:41:29

Harri would just have a lifetime of saying "it's Harry with an i"!

Even then I'd be like "So it's.... Hirry?"

You reminded me of that joke - 'It's Stephen with a PH'.

'OK, so, Phteevan...' grin

libellule1 Wed 11-Jan-17 12:44:04

I like Lucas, Rhydian, William, Ifan and Elias

BertrandRussell Wed 11-Jan-17 12:46:21

"I don't mind correcting the spelling there are loads of names out there that need to be spelt."

Yes, but how will he feel about it?

lucieloos Wed 11-Jan-17 12:52:02

I don't know but plenty of people have names you have to spell myself included. I don't think it's a major problem especially with a relatively simple name.

Sugarpiehoneyeye Wed 11-Jan-17 12:53:08

I like Madoc, Harri and Caian.

Jooni Wed 11-Jan-17 15:00:27

I like Eli, Ifan, Luca, Madoc and Noah best. Good list.

SausageSoda Wed 11-Jan-17 16:01:54

I like Ifan and Luca. Lucas is OK as is William though it's a bit dull. Really don't like the rest.

CakeRattleandRoll Wed 11-Jan-17 16:06:54

I always have to spell my name and my nn. It's never bothered me much.

My favourites are Elias and Rhydian. (Although my favourite Welsh boy's name is Osian - would have loved it for DD if she'd been a boy.)
