Choose the name you really like. DS1 has a name that's pretty much always top 10 and there isn't another in his class. There is in his year but DS goes by a shortened form and the other doesn't.

I'd probably continue to find a name I really loved. And that would probably be a less common name as I seem to love unusual names Also, it would be great if the name can identify (without having to add surname initials or other adjectives)

Just because it's top 10 doesn't necessarily mean there will be others with the same name in your DC's school class

I'd choose the name I really liked. The number one name (Oliver) is only given to 1 in 50 boys each year, so being 1 out of 2 or 3 in a class is statistically very unlikely. And that's the number one name. The number 10 name (Oscar) was only given to 1 in every 88 boys.

Decide if you can cope with 'shortenings' ( or sometimes even 'lengthenings!). If there are 3 Daniels in the class, one will be Dan, one Danny and one Daniel - it won't be you that decides.
Now, I'd take that into account anyway when choosing a name, but you get plent on these threads who want to call their child 'Bartholemew' but cant stand 'Bart'

I accidentally picked a top 5 name for DD. There are no others in her year, 2 class intake. The other name she nearly had was outside the top 50 an she has friend with that name, so you just can't predict really

I had always loved the name Isabelle and imagined I would probably use it if I ever had a daughter. But by the time I got pregnant there were quite a lot of them around so I put it on the 'middle name list' and spent time thinking about other names. Late in pregnancy another name occurred to me. Absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad I chose that name for her. I still love the name Isabelle but there are at least two in each of my children's school years.

Name you love. You can't predict who's going to be in her class at school. DD has a relatively unusual name, about number 300-odd the year she was born. A week after she was born there was another DD-name in the local paper's birth announcements and another one at a baby group we went to.

I have an Oliver. He's the only one in his school of 200...even the most popular baby names aren't really that common on a population basis. I only know one other Oliver who is in his 40's.

Go with the name you love! My daughter is in yr 4 with a three class intake (90 children), and even though many of the children have popular names there are only:
3 girls with one name
2 girls with a other
2 boys with the same name

You can always look at it as you are not alone in your good taste in names!

Because sod's law will intervene if you discard one name for being "too popular" as then you will find 2 or 3 of you unusual name in your class (and that's way more noticeable)

I chose the name I liked. Was no 1 the year DD was born, she's never been in nursery, preschool or school with another!

I would go for a name I really like that I think suits a child and an adult. Not sure why people are bothered about how many in a class? Life extends much further than a school classroom lol xx
