Dory - opinions? (Dorothy)

Is it unusable with the film? Sad BC name would be Dorothy. If it is unusable, we would probably still go for Dorothy - thoughts on this name anyway?

Sorry.

I'm not fond of Dorothy, but think Dory is v sweet.

Agree with BC name not being Dory though - Dorothy as a BC name would be fine.

Dory is cute but I think the blue fish being so popular now has ruined it as a name for a human.

I wouldn't choose Dorothy personally but Dory / Dotty are cute nicknames

I think its a nice name. Yes people will probably think of the wizard of Oz, but. That's not the worse thing to be associated with.
I like Dotty as a nn rather than Dory.

Dot/Dotty is nicer. If you have any Welsh in you you could call her Dwt when she's wee Smile

I prefer Dora.

I'm not a fan of Dorothy as a full name, because to me it's just 1) Dorothy the Dinosaur and 2) Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

But Dory does work as a nickname for Dorothy.

I like Dorothy. I do think Dory would be associated with the fish though.

Love it. Really great name for an adult and there are cute nns like Dotty or Dory :)!

Dory Previn is a distinguished predecessor with the name. I love the shortened version -- much more than the full name "Dorothy" (but can see how you might want a more formal name on the B. Cert.).

Dorothea is another option.
Nn can be Dory, Dora, Dottie, or my favourite Thea

Absent minded fish.

Prefer Dot as an abbreviation of Dorothy.

Hmm I still associate certain, distinctive names with kids'films of the day and I don't think it's fair for a child given the playground jibes.

i.e Digby,
Garfield
Babe
Casper

Dorothea is far nicer than Dorothy. Dorothy just makes me think of the gravelly voiced Golden Girl.

Dottie/Dotty is surely the most logical shortening, and very cute.

Dorothy is lovely, nicely retro.

I think Dory is fine. I know a Dorothy who just goes by Dor.

I love Dora or Dotty.

Not keen on Dory.

I like Dora better. Doreen?

I think Doreen is quite possibly the worst name I've ever seen on MN and there have been some corkers Grin

I know a dog called Dory. He's male.

Quite agree. Not sure what makes us think asking hormonal woman for their opinions on names is a good idea?

Report
DramaAlpaca · 11/01/2017 12:27

I'm not pregnant or particularly hormonal and I can honestly say that Doreen is indeed one of the worst names ever seen on here Grin

I too love Dora and Dottie.

Doreen Grin

I'm not totally sure on Dory tbh. It's going to be very closely associated with that film for a long time

Dorothea with nickname dotty/dot is better; although Thea is the best imo

ClaryIsTheBest · 11/01/2017 13:02

I'm not pregnant either.

And I really don't like Doreen, tbh. It reminds me of an 80ies mashup between Dorthy and Darlene/Darleen...?

I like Dorothy and the nickname Dory would be nice too.

Dorothea is a bit of a mouthful in comparison.
