Hello
We're thinking of calling our daughter Kaya, but I'm unsure if it will get pronounced the right way or not.
Other potential spellings:
Kaiya
Caia

I would really appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks x

Kara is nice, kaya sounds abit harsh

MollyHuaCha Thu 05-Jan-17 19:03:29

Not heard of Kaya before. But if I saw it written down I would assume the same pronunciation as you. Hope that helps smile

Just so you know- Kaya is quite a well known slang term for weed (see Bob Marley song 'Kaya')

Soubriquet Thu 05-Jan-17 19:05:06

My friend has a Dd called Kaya

She pronounces like Kayak without the k

She's always correcting people as some people insist on Kay-ah

DramaAlpaca Thu 05-Jan-17 19:11:51

I'd pronounce it like Soubriquet says, like kayak without the last k.

Another alternative spelling would be Kaia.

I'd pronounce it KIE-ah, is that what you're going for? I do think you'll get some Kay-ah as well, depends how much that will bother you.

I would pronounce Kaia as Kye-ah.

Kaya as Kay-a (but I don't think it would be wrong to pronounce it as Kye-ah)

I know someone called Kiya, I think it's a nice spelling x

SmallBee Thu 05-Jan-17 20:07:42

I would automatically pronounce it Kay-ah.

MudCity Thu 05-Jan-17 20:10:24

I'd pronounce Kaya as Kay-a.

If you want it to be pronounced differently go for Kaia or Kaiya.

The ai makes all the difference in my opinion!

CancellyMcChequeface Thu 05-Jan-17 20:29:36

I'd pronounce:

Kaya - Kay-ah
Kaia/Caia - Kye-ah
Kiya - Kee-ah

whirliebird Thu 05-Jan-17 20:36:04

Ah, the Kiya I know is pronounced 'Kye-ah'

Sophronia Thu 05-Jan-17 21:01:26

I like it spelled Kaia

Pemba Thu 05-Jan-17 21:04:05

I would assume it was K-eye-ah. Probably because of the Bob Marley song. And rhymes with Maya and fire.

But I suppose it could quite easily be Kaya to rhyme with layer.

Which were you going for?

howtheheckdoidealwiththis Thu 05-Jan-17 21:08:04

What about Kya?

Pluto30 Thu 05-Jan-17 21:10:50

I'd spell it Kaia or Caia.

Dolwar Thu 05-Jan-17 21:15:12

I think the point here is that the child will spend its life correcting how people pronounce her name. Incidentally my sister has a friend called Kia (like kayak without the k)

Gallavich Thu 05-Jan-17 21:18:33

I know 2 Kayas (both boys actually) and both are pronounced kye-a
Don't add random extra letters. Kaya is fine.

Mammablue Thu 05-Jan-17 21:34:35

Thanks all. K-eye-a as in rhymes with fire is what we want. Responses confirm to me though that Kaya will be pronounced by some as Kay-ya (as in layer) and so we'll probably go for Kaiya.

Really helpful- thank you.
