Emmeline? Is it emma-line or emma-leen? I love the name emma but prefer a longer name. TIA

Like Pankhurst?

Uiscebeatha85 Wed 04-Jan-17 22:56:15

Emma-leen, I've never heard of anyone pronouncing it Emma-line

MitzyLeFrouf Wed 04-Jan-17 22:59:05

In the Anne of Green Gables TV series there's a character called Emmeline pronounced Emma-line. So both must be correct.

Mummamia14 Wed 04-Jan-17 23:00:25

Maybe emma-line is the american/Canadian way to pronounce it?

Patriciathestripper1 Wed 04-Jan-17 23:00:28

It's spelled Emma-line so that's how I would pronounce it

Emma-leen. I've never heard it pronounced the other way.

DramaAlpaca Wed 04-Jan-17 23:02:00

Lovely name. I'd pronounce it Emma-leen like in the poem by A A Milne where the first verse goes:

Has not been seen
For more than week. She slipped between
The two tall trees at the end of the green…
We all went after her. “Emmeline!”

The poem wouldn't work if it was Emma-line grin

I wouldn't have a clue so would avoid saying it till I'd heard someone else pronounce it!

CocoLoco87 Wed 04-Jan-17 23:04:03

I'd say it how it's spelt, Emma-line

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown Wed 04-Jan-17 23:05:18

I pronounce it more like Emma-Lynn, but only because I know one who pronounces it like that and goes by the nn Lynn

twinjocks Wed 04-Jan-17 23:05:25

I say it more like Emmeh-leen - the A doesn't come out as strongly as on the end of the name Emma.

MitzyLeFrouf Wed 04-Jan-17 23:05:33

We've not seen a sign
For more than a week. She slipped behind
The two tall trees at the end of the Rhine

MollyHuaCha Wed 04-Jan-17 23:06:09

The line part rhymes with green. Does not rhyme with pine.

Crispbutty Wed 04-Jan-17 23:06:26

Same type of spelling... Different pronunciation

OrlandaFuriosa Wed 04-Jan-17 23:07:01

Originally French so leen,

LineyReborn Wed 04-Jan-17 23:07:49

Rhymes with movie screen.

Crispbutty Wed 04-Jan-17 23:08:29

And hot chocolate sang about "emmalene"

instagramhorror Wed 04-Jan-17 23:08:37

Pankhurst! Great name and what a role model too!

TaggySits Wed 04-Jan-17 23:08:44

I have a friend called this, she pronounces it Emma-line.

lazydog Wed 04-Jan-17 23:10:12

Maybe emma-line is the american/Canadian way to pronounce it?

Well, I only know one Emmaline - she's a Canadian - and she pronounces it Emmaleen smile
