I am pregnant with my first child, I don't know if I am having a boy or girl at this point. My favourite name for a girl is Posy. I also love Peony but someone very near me used it so I won't. My OH hates Posy and there is no way he'll ever agree to using it if we have a girl unfortunately. Is it really that awful? I like flower names in general, Violet, Rose and Daisy are all lovely but I feel Posy is more original and less common.

I'm not a fan, makes me think of ring a ring of roses (which is about plague) and an an insult my teenage sister uses about other girls who she thinks are fake (I.e she's really posey, like always posing and flirting). I generally prefer stronger names though so it's a all just personal preference. Rose is lovely

Like Posy Possil in Ballet Shoes? Lovely name.

What about:

Similar "feel" to Posy but less cutesy!

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay Wed 14-Dec-16 18:33:26

I love Posy, but I loved Ballet Shoes. Gorgeous (if in hindsight slightly odd) book!

I have a Josephine who goes by Posey now (18 months) but can choose something different as she gets older. Would that be a compromise? It's a common nn for Josephine

Posy is sweet on a little girl but too cutesy for an adult in my opinion. It can however be a nickname for Josephine, you could go for that as a compromise.

I like Posy (have seen it spelled Posie too).

Other flower/botanical names you could consider are:

I also know someone who called their little girl Ivy- not one I would have chosen initially but actually works really well.

I love it! Haven't thought about that name since reading ballet shoes.
Baby Posy sounds adorable.

You could always give her a more traditional 'grown up' middle name maybe one your husband picks incase she ever wants to change it round when she's older.

DearMrDilkington Wed 14-Dec-16 18:49:56

Posy just reminds me of the plague song I'm afraid.

RusholmeRuffian Wed 14-Dec-16 18:59:12

Reminds me of The Flumps. You're probably too young to remember that though.

FATEdestiny Wed 14-Dec-16 19:08:38

I like Posy

How about Felicity? It's not a flower name, just a lovely name.

PigletWasPoohsFriend Wed 14-Dec-16 19:10:10

I too think of the Flumps

babyjake Wed 14-Dec-16 19:12:10

Am surprised by the Posy love. I really don't like it. Agree with the plague reference. And makes me think of selfie posing.

CarrotCakeMuffins Wed 14-Dec-16 19:14:11

Another one here who immediately thought of the Flumps!

Minty82 Wed 14-Dec-16 19:14:43

I know a Posy short for Rosanna if your husband might be persuaded to use it as a nickname for something longer and you weren't tempted by Josephine? I do find it a bit cutesy, but there's always Posy Simmonds to counteract that! (I love Ballet Shoes to, but always remember how Posy is introduced "Her name is Posy. Unfortunate, but true."

Posy is lovely

How about Poppy (full name Poppea).

My grandmother was named Pansy as it was her fathers favourite flower

InfiniteCurve Wed 14-Dec-16 19:16:32

I love Posy, but Ballet Shoes associations rather than Ring O'Roses associations for me too.
On the other hand that wouldn't people using Rose or Rosie as a name so why should it stop them using Posy?

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies Wed 14-Dec-16 19:20:42

I'm less sure that the Ballet Shoes link is a positive. I can't get past the 'Her name is Posy. Unfortunate but true.'

Apart from that, it's a pretty name.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies Wed 14-Dec-16 19:22:33

And Minty has beaten me to the quote.

SausageSoda Wed 14-Dec-16 19:24:59

I've never liked the name Posy. What about Fleur or Flora? I love Violet too.

Minty82 Wed 14-Dec-16 19:25:24

Ha, sorry Matilda! But your post made me reread my own and see that I not only failed to close my brackets but also said 'to' when I meant 'too'. Horror!

Pluto30 Wed 14-Dec-16 20:17:37

Posy is awful...

But I like Rosie and Daisy, in a similar vein.

Posy is just so babyish.

TroysMammy Wed 14-Dec-16 20:21:17

Posy, Pootle and Perkin Flump. I loved them, da da, da da, da da da da, daa daa da da da.
