I've gone off my 3 month old's name... Help!

My 3 month old daughter has a name that isn't that common (isn't in the top 100) which I like. I never shorten it, but don't care what other people do, if they used the known shortenings.

There's a NN I honestly never thought of, they're saying it to take the piss (family) but go on to say how she'll get it all her life anyway, so they are starting her young hmm

I'm thinking of changing it to Grace, I know that's popular, but there's no offensive NNs, is there?

What's the name OP ?
Grace is a nice name, she could get Gracie.
Are your family taking the Mick, if they are, they're cruel. 😡

EssentialHummus Tue 22-Nov-16 18:23:52

What's the name/NN?

Honestly, it sounds as though your family is being a bit cruel or not getting how sensitive you are about this.

Niece is Grace, she gets called Gracie most of the time... What's the name/nn?

elijahismylove Tue 22-Nov-16 18:27:51

Name is Gabriella. They are currently calling her Gobby Gabby. I know it isn't the worst thing in the world, but they just make me feel bad about it, saying that's what her teachers will be calling her in the staff room... Yet they have no idea if she'll even be 'gobby'. I just don't like the way they say it tbh.

Gabriella is a beautiful name. Just ignore your family.

My dd has a name which is often shortened, I don't like the shortened version. Ex-h's family insist on calling her by the short version, absolutely no one else does. Not me or my family, no one at school, none of her friends, no one from clubs or other activities. Literally everyone else can get the concept that her name is the long version and that's what she wants to be called. Never been an issue. So I would say that if you still like the name, stick with it, NNs are by no means inevitable.

Blue2014 Tue 22-Nov-16 18:30:18

If you like it, stick with it. Sounds like your family will be arses whatever you choose

BridgetWard Tue 22-Nov-16 18:30:38

Your family sounds a bit insensitive, I can't imagine anyone calling her Gobby Gabby and even if they do, it's really not that bad, I went to school with a Myrtle and thanks to JK Rowling, she was Moaning Myrtle throughout high school, even though she never moaned hmm

OhFuds Tue 22-Nov-16 18:30:48

Aw how mean of them to call a new baby that!

Gabriella is a lovely name and I wouldn't change it, definitely have words with the people calling her Gobby Gabby.

Islacornx Tue 22-Nov-16 18:31:01

Your family are being really insensitive and cruel. Please ignore them. Gabriella is an absolutely beautiful name! Please don't be put off by the name because of your family, have you told them to stop and how it makes you feel? X

tellyjots Tue 22-Nov-16 18:31:03

Gabriella is a beautiful name. Ignore your family, they are being dicks.

Alternatively you could tell us some of their names to see what we can come up with for them.

dalmatianmad Tue 22-Nov-16 18:31:25

I love the name Gabriella, it's a beautiful name, you're family are arseholes wink

kavvLar Tue 22-Nov-16 18:32:35

If someone wants to twist a name into an insult then they will.

For example Grace - butt face

You can't legislate for dick heads. What you can do is raise your daughter to hold her head high, give a withering look, and ignore the idiots. Gabriella is a beautiful name. Don't change it because of some idiots you know.

finova Tue 22-Nov-16 18:32:56

That's not a nickname.
If you change it to Grace it'll prob become 'grumpy Grace' or 'grouchy Grace' when she cries if they are that way inclined.

EssentialHummus Tue 22-Nov-16 18:33:54

Don't change it because of some idiots you know.

Hear hear!

ThroughThickAndThin01 Tue 22-Nov-16 18:34:42

I'd stick with Gabriella. She can put them straight when she's old enough. Honestly, every name has the potential of some sort of nickname.

elijahismylove Tue 22-Nov-16 18:35:13

I just feel like it's going to end up being Gobby... She gets Gobs from them too, instead of Gabs (I don't really mind Gabs) but Gobs, so they're shortening Gobby is ridiculous.

Thatwaslulu Tue 22-Nov-16 18:36:14

Bloody hell that's a horrid thing to call a baby. Incidentally it is the same nn my son and his friends give to their disliked headteacher whose surname is Gabby.

LestatVonGaribaldi Tue 22-Nov-16 18:36:35

Tbh I'd just start calling my family silly/offensive nn, so Mick the Dick, Daniel the Spaniel etc and refuse to drop it until they agree the same

MissMargie Tue 22-Nov-16 18:37:09

I would stick with it.
It is a lovely name. Attractive, unusual, impressive, I prefer it to Grace.

Thatwaslulu Tue 22-Nov-16 18:37:09

I don't mean Gabriella is a horrid name by the way. It's not. It's really pretty (prettier than Grace)

SimonNeilshair Tue 22-Nov-16 18:38:07

Gabrielle is a beautiful name, I'd never have thought of that NN and I doubt the majority of people will either! don't change it. Do your family know how much you dislike it and that you are considering changing it? I hope they feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves if they do!

Normandy144 Tue 22-Nov-16 18:39:03

Oh please don't change it. It's such a beautiful name - it's my daughters middle name. I feel like if you change it to Grace then they will have won. Have you actually told them how upset it is making you feel and that you are seriously contemplating changing it because of their behaviour? I'd be tempted to start calling them by unpleasant nicknames and see how they like it. Can you tell us their names and we can come up with some suitable suggestions? In all honesty though, when Gabriella is old enough she can tell them where to go!

user1479835256 Tue 22-Nov-16 18:40:32

Hi my best friends daughter is a Gabriella and even though she really is Gobby no one has ever called her that. I also went to school with a Gabrielle and no one ever called her that NN.

I think your family are just being a bit weird. I've never heard this name ever shortened to Gobby. Do they know any other Gabriella's?

It's a lovely name and will stand you in good stead when she is older.
