Baby names

Do I need to ask to use this name?

Hi,

I think we have decided on Madeleine for our baby girl - we really love Maddie too. I know it's popular on here, but I don't know any.

My aunt let me stay with her (while I was growing up) so she's quite a big person in my life. Her daughter (now 11) is called Madison... NN Maddie. She's obviously my cousin and wonderful. There are a couple of other names we would use, so would you just pick one of those? I don't think she'd mind, but then I don't know!

Thank you

I would probably just mention that you like the name Madeleine, and have been considering it. But don't ask to use it. You don't need permission to use a name. I can't imagine your aunt would have a problem with it, especially has her Maddie is now 11 (not a newborn, which may've made it seem like you were 'stealing her thunder')

We liked Olive but chose to forgo it as there's an Olivia in the family. Her mother wouldn't have minded at all, but I'm funny about similar names (and family names, which makes me odd). I think she would've been chuffed that I agreed with her taste in names! Grin

I think it would be a compliment to your aunt/cousin.

She's obviously been an important person in your life growing up, she could take it as you sort of naming your DD after hers? I think you should use it. Smile

I don't think you need to ask, no.

But you could mention that you like that name and ask her what she thinks...? But I don't think that's necessary. Madison and Madeleine aren't that similar.

However, I don't think you should use the same nn! That would be rude.
