How do you pronounce Violet?

I say it like Vile-et, so it kind of breaks Vi-ol-et. DP says Veye-let...

This is my nan's name, although she calls herself Vi usually.

She, and the rest of us, pronounce it veye-o-let, she is quite particular though, I think a lot of people would say it as veye-lett.

Definitely three syllables for me, though the middle one isn't stressed - VY-oh-let.

Vi-o-let

Vio (to rhyme with Bio) - let.
3 fairly even syllables

A 3 syllable Violet is quite a mouthful!

Vi- lit

Vi let here. Vi o let is a mouthful

Vi-o-let.

Think the three syllable way is nicer than the two.

I love the name and I've just decided it's jumped to No 1 on my Never Having Another Child but Just In Case List I do List.

For me it rhymes with eyelet.

'Violent' without the 'N'.

Or, yes, as Chinlo says.

Via-let - three syllables just, run together smoothly rather than distinctly pronounced

MooseyMouse · 07/11/2016 05:03

Like eyelet. Two syllables.

NoArtificialColours · 07/11/2016 05:54

Like eyelet here too! Sorry I'd use 2 syllables

This is my DDs name and I know I pronounce it 'wrong'. Vee-Oh-let (soft barely there -t sound (ish).

(I struggle with T's at the end of my words but would pronounce it with a stronger T sound if I could, and sometimes I do). I shouldn't have chosen an English name for a French child. Most people pronounce it VYE-oh-let or VYE-let though which is fine. I think most people pronounce it the same in effect but dialect alters how it comes out. It certainly does within my family.

Like eyelet.

Two syllables, not three.

VY-let.

I don't think anyone here in Australia would pronounce it Vy-OH-let. We're not about that life.

3 syllables.

Is it an accent thing? I would have thought there was only one way to pronounce it.

Beautiful name!!

I pronounce it 3 syllables but the Vio bit is not very distinct as 2 syllables if you know what I mean!

Vi-Let 2 syllables, but my Aunti Vi always pronounced it Vi-O-Let.
I think its an accent thing though, it wouldn't really matter how you pronounced it lots of people will pronounce it differently or shorten it.
