We have a Connor which I can't really see it being shortened

Con doesn't really roll off the tongue does it?

However whilst young you can insist full name with your son.
But when he gets to school, no matter what the name, his friends could come up with a nickname. Might not even have anything to do with his name!

I know two young Hugos and never heard them shortened to Hugh (though it one gets called Hugs).
Hmm. Isaac, Louis, Saul, Seth, Milo?

His name probably will be shortened whatever you do so I'd just go with something you love and correct people where you can. I have a sibling called Shaun and he gets called S. They'll find a way.

Just choose a name you love. Don't worry about diminutives. You dont have to use them at home and you can't control everything in your childs life.
Even if they can't shorten it they can lengthen it or double it! eg. Johnno Jojo etc

I want a bit of a posho sounding name , in the same sort of vein as my original 'likes', but something short ! :-D

mumgointhroughtorture Sun 23-Oct-16 14:42:24

I know a Tobias shortened to Bias .

ds1 has an 'unshortenable one syllable name' - he still has a nickname, that's actually longer than his real name hmm

TallulahBetty Sun 23-Oct-16 14:47:20

Even if they can't be shortened, they'll still find a way to make a nickname. Or maybe even longer. E.g. John becomes Johnno.

They can all be pet-named even if not shortened: George to Georgie, Jake to Jakey-boo etc

You don't own your child's name, you can't control how other people will say it, just pick one you like

Colleague has a son with a very normal top 10 name who always gets called Peanut. (none of us have any idea why started in 2ndary)

I have a Conrad some people try to shorten it to Con So I think Connor could be shortened too. Conrad simply ignores it.

All names can be shortened (I know an Ava who gets shortened to Av for example) Many short names gets lenghtenend However you can stop the shortening. So if for example you go with Joseph and people start calling him Joe. Simply say " We call him Joseph not Joe" People get used to it.

I don't accept any shortening of my name. I don't like mine all that much but once you shorten it I REALLY don't like it. None of my 4 children get their name shortened as they don't care for the short versions of their names.

So stand firm and people do get used to it. Most people do not intent to be rude.

Also your child might one day decide they WANT a nickname. It's their name after all smile

Noah, James, John, Lewis, Attacus, Norbert, Sydney, Louis

Honestly, just give them whatever name you like and when asked, that's their name! Someone will always lengthen or shorten a name, just correct them. We have many of the names in our family on your list and they're used as chosen!

I am a Catherine and my sister is an Elizabeth and we have both never had our names shortened in our lives. I think my parents must have been very firm in the early days!
I don't understand all the angst about nicknames on mn to be honest. To me, a nickname is something you aquire over time, not something prescribed by your parents
I find the vast majority of nicknames suggested on here too 'cutesy' for real people!
