Lorenzo or Laurence

Which do you prefer between Lorenzo and Laurence? We are trying to decide between the two. His background is partly Italian but he will grow up in the U.K.

Laurence is a French girls' name. (Boys' version is Laurent, with a silent t)

Well, Laurence is a boy's name in the UK, so unless the child is also part French, I don't think it's relevant that it's a girl's name in France. Although I suppose you could spell it Lawrence to be on the safe side.

How Italian is he exactly? Lorenzo sounds very Italian to me so I think I'd only use it if he was half Italian and was going to learn the language.

Thanks namechange. He is half Italian and will likely learn the language (his sister is fluent). We go to Italy frequently. But he will grow up in England. Would you go for Lorenzo in that case?

Use the Italian, celebrate his mixed heritage.

I think it's even more important to do this visibly at a time when this country is trying to batten down the hatches and make itself an insular nation.
I intend to name my next child after his Polish, Swedish, Italian and Scottish grandparents.

In that case I would use either! I like Enzo as a nickname, so I'd probably go for Lorenzo, but Laurence is nice too (what nickname would you have? Laurie?)

Lorenzo. We have mixed Italian/English children and chose an Italian name for Ds when in uk. It makes them unique and helps bring up his mixed heritage. Now living in Italy but even if you move you will find a classic name like Lorenzo is not common now (loads of Diego and Micol's) so it is appreciated in both places. Italian family will struggle with Laurence pronunciation too!

I have a Lawrence and often call him Lorenzo as a nickname - not sure if that helps!

I would be tempted to honour the Italian heritage as he can always shorten it later if he wants.

I would go with Lawrence as the abbreviation of Laurie is nicer than Enzo (thinking Enzo the baker from the godfather ). Lawrence also sounds more regal/classic

I like them both too and am stuck between them both too. My husband is Spanish and my other sons have a Spanish first name but I vetoed this time and said I want to choose the name but I actually like Laurence AND Lorenzo and can't decide which sounds best. Especially with a Spanish surname!
