What do you think of Mireya (pronounced Mir-RAY-ah) as a girl's first name?

gratesnakes Mon 26-Sep-16 10:50:46

It's pretty but unfortunately similar to Mirena (the coil). Is it a "real name"?

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 10:51:34

Yes it's a Spanish name - it means miracle. Haha that was exactly what I was wondering re Mirena!!!

bloodymaria Mon 26-Sep-16 10:51:48

TBH it looks like a misspelling of Mariah.

LessonsLearned Mon 26-Sep-16 10:53:06

I thought the Spanish for miracle was "milagro"?

anotherdayanothersquabble Mon 26-Sep-16 10:54:15

Mirena..

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 10:55:00

Yes milagro also means miracle

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 10:56:35

I also really like Mireille (Mee-ray) which is the French version but worried that people won't know how to pronounce it in the UK!

Brokenbiscuits86 Mon 26-Sep-16 10:56:55

I'm sorry but when I saw the title I read it as Mirena!

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 10:57:30

Don't be sorry, I asked for precisely that reason as wanted to see if others would think that!

EssentialHummus Mon 26-Sep-16 11:04:25

I think I'd go with the French version if you're dead set on this meaning.

legfaced Mon 26-Sep-16 11:05:37

Sounds like a contraceptive.

ayeokthen Mon 26-Sep-16 11:06:44

The coil was the first thing I thought of when I saw it, sorry.

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 11:08:55

Not dead set on the meaning at all, just trying to play around with ideas...

ScarletSahara Mon 26-Sep-16 11:28:02

Mireille is lovely. The Basque spelling; Mirai may help with pn concerns?

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 11:33:15

Thanks that's helpful re the spelling of Mireille/Mirai...

RiverTam Mon 26-Sep-16 11:45:16

I thought Mirena too, sorry!

everdene Mon 26-Sep-16 12:05:07

I also love the name Mireille (and have to agree Mireya reminded me of the coil!).

Lots of people might initially mispronounce it or ask how it's pronounced but they'd only need to be told once and from then on it'd be straightforward (same with lots of unusual/foreign names I guess!)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost Mon 26-Sep-16 14:30:50

Sounds like a tablet or contraceptive.
How about
Mia. it means wished for child

AmeliaJack Mon 26-Sep-16 14:38:01

The only thing is, I don't think the population in general are aware of "Mirena Coil".

I wasn't until I got one in my late thirties, I'm pretty sure my DH couldn't tell you my coil
is a ""Mirena" coil and my parents certainly wouldn't.

I think it's a pretty name and not that much of an issue. You'll be pleased to hear my iPhone has autocorrected Mirena to Mireya every time!

user1474882999 Mon 26-Sep-16 16:08:06

What about Mariella or Ariana?

viques Mon 26-Sep-16 16:12:00

Please not Mireille. The most evil teacher ever known. The day she resigned the word went around the playground and staff room like wildfire and the entire area was illuminated by smiles......... Sorry, personal feelings getting in the way of reasoned argument there.

DavidPuddy Mon 26-Sep-16 19:12:09

Or Mirja or Milena?

DavidPuddy Mon 26-Sep-16 19:14:16

Mirja is a German name, so you would pronounce the j more like a y.

But actually I like Mireya.

hollyisalovelyname Mon 26-Sep-16 19:19:19

I thought of Mirena too straight away.
