Baby names

Disgraced reality 'star' has ruined my perfect baby name!

A popular baby name website has thoughtfully included on the list of famous people who share the perfect name we have picked out for a boy Sad I had previously seen headlines relating to this person's antics, so I knew he was dodgy, but didn't pay attention to his name. Since discovering that my baby would share this person's first and middle name, and googling what he has actually done, I feel sick and don't think I can use it now.

DH and I have been trying to come up with alternative names, but there aren't any we like as much as this combination. Our 20 week scan is on Friday, and we'll be finding out the gender, but I don't want to go without a name in mind. Girl name is sorted. No dodgy connections Wink

WWYD??

Who is it and how dodgy is their dodginess? Is it really something people will be aware of and associate with that name forever? If not, don't worry about it at all.

Could you switch around the first and middle names if it still bothers you?

Is the name so unusual that most people will think of this person straight away? Would people also be familiar with his middle name?

If the answer to either is No then I would just go ahead. If you didn't know about him without googling then chances are others won't either.

Without actually disclosing the name (it's a MN 'blah' kind of name but I love it) think along the lines of William Henry then finding out that's Bill Cosby's birth name Hmm I think this person is/his family are better known in the States. He's behaved indecently towards young female siblings...

I don't want to switch the names around as I'd be livid if someone referred to him then by the nickname, which is the name of a paedophile. But again, a lovely name aside from that. Eugh Confused

Think the pg hormones are screwing with my head....

Sorry, just re-read my opening post, which makes no sense.

Should read 'thoughtfully included him on a list....' Hmm

Is the name Joshua James as in Duggar?

If so, then I think that there are enough other people in the world with that name that you don't need to worry. They're very popular names.

Hence being seen as 'blah' with a MN eye roll Blush

I thought Duggar when you described but I definitely would not make that connection
Joshua way too popular for that

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 07/09/2016 10:49

Seriously, no one will get that connection.

If you love the name go for it, they're popular names because they're nice names.

Report
Bubblebloodypop · 07/09/2016 10:51

No ones going to make that connection, it's a lovely name too.

regularbutpanickingabit · 07/09/2016 10:52

Definitely wouldn't make that association without the surname as well. Both Joshua and James are great names and if they are your favourite then don't waste a second more worrying about the association. Sadly, there are paedophiles and bad people with all sorts of names and if you look hard enough, you would probably find someone with every name you have ever liked.

Honestly, lovely names and no bad associations to worry about.

Thank you Flowers

I think I'm just over-thinking the name to detract from what's really worrying me about having an anomaly scan since losing our boy at 17 weeks last October. Thinking about names approx. 6 months after losing him helped us to visualise, and think positively about, having a healthy baby, but this revelation mph as marred it a bit Confused

I think you're overthinking this op! I wouldn't have known there was any such person as I'm sure most people won't.

Oh X-post. Flowers sorry for your loss but, gently, yes you're overthinking.

chipmonkey · 07/09/2016 10:55

No-one would ever make that connection. There are lots of other famous Joshuas and he wouldn't be the first that would spring to mind by a long shot.

If it is Joshua James then there are loads of them. Google gives me:

Joshua James jewellers
Joshua James folk singer (US)
Joshua James car dealership

I'm on the second page of the search results and still no association with the Duggars.

Perhaps you could keep the first name and choose a different middle name?

Report
Stillunexpected · 07/09/2016 11:04

Unless the first name is very, very unusual no-one is going to make that connection. Even sharing the middle name, how many people will know both your son's middle name and the middle name of this disgraced celebrity? And how many of those few people will have never heard of the "celebrity" anyway? You said yourself you had to google to find out what he had done.

Stillunexpected · 07/09/2016 11:06

As an example, if you were going to call your child Maxwell Frank how many people would know that those are Max Clifford's names or associate them with him? (Obviously I realise you are not talking about him but it's just an example)

paranormalish · 07/09/2016 11:06

if it helps , never heard of Joshu James Duggar.

Report
OhFuds · 07/09/2016 11:07

Use the name OP Flowers

I didn't know that was his proper name, I've always read stuff about him being referred to as Josh Duggar.

Report
FurryTurnip · 07/09/2016 11:08

You are worrying to much, I have never heard of that person, and they are lovely names.

If you tried hard enough you could find a bad association to any name. Never thought about it before but my son shares a name with a famous serial killer!

cosytoaster · 07/09/2016 11:09

I'm slightly obsessed with American fundies and even I wouldn't make the connection, probably because they are perfectly nice, normal names in their own right. Best wishes for the scan.

I've heard the name but didn't know what it referred to until this thread.
I don't keep up with news celebs or popular trashy tv programmes so know nothing about most things others think everyone does.
Lovely names I wouldn't think twice if it was what I'd chosen.

Loyly · 07/09/2016 11:09

Flowers OP.

I also guessed Duggar from your description and yet still would not think of him if I heard the name Joshua or Joshua James.

Report
Stillunexpected · 07/09/2016 11:10

My nephew is called Joshua James, am 100% certain none of our family have made that connection, nor am I likely to ever think about it again even now that I know the names.
