Is Miranda too dated?

I'm only 11 weeks so very early days, but have started a little list after having a trawl through the ONS 2015 list yesterday!

Of course we don't know the sex yet, but I'd been toying with the name Miranda and rather liked it. I was surprised to see how low down the rankings it was - only 17 babies named Miranda in E&W last year!

Is it because it's rather dated / awful? It hasn't put me off, I suppose I was just surprised at its underuse - I thought it was quite pretty/elegant.

It's classic, timeless and lovely. Shakespearean names won't always be popular, but will never be 'out'.

I love the name Miranda, Dh doesn't... He can't separate "Miranda" the tv show from the name and can't picture it on a child!

Makes me think if the character in The Tempest. I really like it. Unusual, but classic.

I didn't think of Miranda Hart, at all when I read your post.

It's a pretty name, and as she grows up, fewer and fewer people will associate the name with her.

When I was younger, I always wanted to name a daughter Phebe, for the character in the Louisa May Alcott books. But, because Friends had been very popular on television, just a few years before, I worried about the character in that, and decided not to call DD1 that name, after all.

Now, nearly 20 years later, people would barely register Friends if they heard the name Phebe, and Miranda will be the same, as your DD grows up.

I don't think it's dated at all - it's one of those names like Elizabeth or Maria which are age-less. A dated name would be one which marks you as part of a certain generation like Kayleigh/Kylie/Keeley from the late 80s or Courtney/Demi from the 1990s.

Great choice of name for a little girl and will suit whatever she ends up being as an adult.

I like it. It was on my long list. Classic, not dated. I think it's one of those names that doesn't sound dated, because it's never been particularly in fashion. Or at least not as long as I can remember.

I think it's timeless, it's never been particularly fashionable so it'll never really date.

Nope.

For a while there, I thought it was going to have a real revival. I worked at a primary school for a bit in 2013 and there was a Miranda in Kindergarten and a Miranda in Year 2.

I like the name a lot, but only in its full form. I think the potential of the "Randy" shortening would put me off permanently.
