Apparently this is the new 'it' girls name to watch.

Yay or nay?

nancy75 Sun 28-Aug-16 01:43:16

Like port vale? Or is it said another way?

Cavogirl Sun 28-Aug-16 02:31:56

Nay for me

YokoUhOh Sun 28-Aug-16 02:35:09

Latin for 'goodbye'?

OlennasWimple Sun 28-Aug-16 02:53:21

How are people saying that? "Veil"? "Var-ley"? "Valei"? Something else?

(Think it's a nay from me regardless though)

MrsGsnow18 Sun 28-Aug-16 08:55:16

From the title I thought it was a boys name suggestion.
I think it could unisex.
I'm just pronouncing it 'Vail'
It's not bad, I wouldn't really rate it that highly personally though. But certainly see nothing wrong with it!

WhatKatyDidnt Sun 28-Aug-16 09:02:46

Short for Valentino/a?

Lightbulbon Sun 28-Aug-16 09:14:30

There are worse names.

I assumed it was a boy though.

fluentinsarcasm Sun 28-Aug-16 09:26:17

I think it sounds unisex too. Some celebs in America have used it so it will probably become popular soon.

fluentinsarcasm Sun 28-Aug-16 09:27:32

I assumed it's pronounced Veil.

heehaaw Sun 28-Aug-16 09:29:38

There's a pretty rough area called the Vale of Leven, usually referred to as the Vale- kind of negative connotations in the west of Scotland.

EssentialHummus Sun 28-Aug-16 09:36:15

I'd assume it was pronounced like "Valley", as I've met Italian "Valli"s and would assume this was a variation.

It means "OK" in Spanish (^Bal-lay^). It's not briliant but it's, er, OK. Not keen on the Vale spelling.

BertrandRussell Sun 28-Aug-16 09:39:15

I heard that Mary Beard has twin grand daughters called Ave and Vale.............

fluentinsarcasm Sun 28-Aug-16 09:40:54

What other way would you spell it Essential if it is pronounced Veil?

EssentialHummus Sun 28-Aug-16 10:05:08

fluent - If it's supposed to be pronounced Veil, I'd spell it "Veil". If the meaning behind the name is intended to be "vale" - as in "...of Glamorgan" - I'd spell it Vale. But I am not a fan of either - falls into the "words not names" category for me.

Ham69 Mon 29-Aug-16 13:32:40

Birth announcement cards could be Maida Vale

*gets coat*

scrivette Mon 29-Aug-16 13:44:10

Ham grin

Not really keen on it, it's okay.

RitesOfSpring Mon 29-Aug-16 14:08:52

I don't like it.

ageingrunner Mon 29-Aug-16 14:11:31

No, not keen

Spaghettidog Mon 29-Aug-16 14:14:12

No, no. It screams Latin gravestone inscription, skulls and mourning cherubs.

BertrandRussell Mon 29-Aug-16 14:26:21

Just can back to see if anyone appreciated my rather good (in my opinion) joke. Nobody did. sad

Spaghettidog Mon 29-Aug-16 14:42:29

I appreciated it, Bertrand. Only I was rushing and misread 'Beard' for 'Berry', which gave it a note of utter weirdness. grin

RitesOfSpring Mon 29-Aug-16 14:50:36

I didn't get the joke in the slightest, sorry Bertrand.

ageingrunner Mon 29-Aug-16 15:20:08

The joke went right over my head, I suspect because I don't know any Latin? Would it survive an explanation?
