Sci-Fi based names?

My DH watches all manner of these shite programmes and wants to name our child something outlandish.

I'm not completely opposed to having a less common name, and I'm prepared to listen to his ideas, but I'm hoping someone can suggest reasonably sensible names that I can put to him, because so far I'm not liking his suggestions. I'd like a real name rather than something totally made up for tv.

There is another thread about star wars/trek (which has made me brave enough to post this) so I'm good there. Think Stargate, Farscape, Continuum, Firely, Definance, Andromeda, etc
He does also like heroes based ones such as Arrow. Flash, Shield, etc.

Oh, we don't know what we are having, so need names suitable for each please.

I believe a nickname for Elizabeth can be Buffy - might that work? Then there's the option of a Sci-Fi / fantasy name but also the choice for the child not to use it if they aren't keen themselves

My cats are called Thrace and Roslin, after BSG characters.

My child has a normal name, because she's a person.

We ended up calling ds a name from a video game. Trust me it's gorgeous Grin
Some that I've really liked are;

Garrus (boy)
Liara
Tali
Thane

Gipsy, your son is called commander shepard, isn't he? Grin

There's lots of normal names in firefly. Zoe, Simon, Malcolm, Kaylee. River is pretty mainstream these days.

Agents of Shield? Daisy/Skye, Gemma, Hunter, Bobbie, Fitz. Coulson is a pretty cool first name.

Daniel or Jackson for Stargate?

Jean-luc! You can always claim some French ancestry if you're too embarrassed to admit the origins of the name Grin

Oh I'm not letting anything crazy get past me - he has a very common name for his age and hated being one of 6 in his class (not even year).
I have a perfectly normal name but didn't meet anyone with my name til I was about 14. I quite like that I don't know lots of people with my name, so I'm happy with uncommon.
Just trying to find a happy medium if possible.

Tali and Leon are nice - what are they from? I like Zoe too

I would just think of a name you like and then ask here if there is a SF connection. There usually will be!

I mean, just from Stargate there are names like Jack, Cameron and Daniel (or Samantha and Janet)!

Also, is it just SF, or does he also like Fantasy?

I nearly called dd Inara. Love it. Different, but also an actual name. Anya was also up there.

You just need to sit and have a joss whedon marathon for ideas!

thatstoast Grin it was a contender. We actually used the antagonist name from a final fantasy game.

My ds is named after a man who tried to tear apart time/ kill a goddess to protect his charge. Big shoes to fill Grin

Anya is a lovely name. Willow is nice too.

The trick to whedon names is to take a common name (Alexander, Christopher, Malcolm etc) and then use an uncommon nickname. Although that itself might become popular. I don't think there were lots of Xanders when Buffy first aired but it's pretty common now.

I am using Malcolm as one of my DS's middle names after Captain Mal Reynolds from Firefly. It was the front runner for his first name for awhile as well! I'm 38 weeks so not long now!

My twins are named after a Marvel character (from Avengers) and a DC character (from the TV show Arrow) - however they are also perfectly normal girls names, so no one needs to know how geeky we are...

Green Arrow's first name is Oliver.

Namechanged as this will totally out me to people who know me!

We have a Zoe - from Firefly and the videogame Left 4 Dead. We really liked the name and then remembered the associations with a show and game we also really liked. Younger DD is Talia - again liked the name and DH is a big comic fan so the Batman link was perfect. The names are not too wacky and only us and a few others know the geeky reasons for choosing them! DH loves Stargate so suggested Samantha or Jack.

One of DH's colleagues has a Kaylee (also from Firefly). A friend has a Ben (Star Wars).

Other suggestions:
Willow (Buffy)
Anya (Buffy)
Caitlin (Flash)
Felicity (Arrow)
Cara/Kara (Supergirl or Battlestar Galactica)
Rae (new Star Wars) - I think they spell it Rey in the film but Rae is nicer IMHO
Jessica (Jessica Jones)

Oliver (Arrow)
Matthew (Daredevil)
Luke (Star Wars)

There are literally hundreds of normal sounding names that might have a Sci-Fi association not commonly known. I could go on all day Blush

Inara is beautiful. That's going on my list. Liking Felicity too.

They might fall under being too normal/common/popular though - It still needs to meet the uncommon criteria, so things like Oliver, Ben, Luke Matthew aren't going to cut it with him I think, although I do like the stealth geekiness aspect!
Maybe the uncommon nickname suggestion will work....
