DC1 on the way and people keep telling me my girls name choices are silly! They're all my favourite names and have been for years. DP likes a few of them.

Thoughts please?...

Girls (middle name will be Jane, Valerie or Emily):
Harvie
Hazel
Jordan
Aurora
Olive
Maxie

Boys (middle name will be Kenneth, David or Harry):
Leo
Lukas
Harvey
Finn

Hazel and Olive are ok, the others to me look like the 'what I'll name my future baby...' List of a 12year old. Sorry!

When I say people I mean my mum, MIL and a couple of other family members.

It's true I will never please everyone, just would rather have a name family didn't actively dislike

Stop telling people.

Your names are original, quirky and lovely.

Not initially keen on Maxie as it makes me think maxi pad though Shock but after about 5 minutes of knowing your lovely girl I'm sure I wouldn't make that connection ever again, it would just be her name

Wait til the baby arrives, then choose a name and announce it. Telling people in advance just invites criticism but when it's actually the baby's name they'll shut up.

Harvie and Maxie (Pad) are beyond silly.

The rest, while not to my taste, are fine.

Rule number one of naming your baby: you announce the name when they're born, otherwise people think they have a say.

That said, for the sake of the child I'd stick to something that works in all scenarios in the future (no fun being an obese Maxie).

Never discuss or tell anyone any potential names! Just keep it between you and your partner, and then no one can criticise. Then just announce the name of your baby when they've arrived. It only causes hassle and upset to discuss it in advance with anyone else, even close family members.

Your name lists seem perfectly reasonable to me, they're not that extreme! Personally I don't like odd spellings like Harvie, where Harvey is more usual, and the names are not particularly to my taste - but the point is they are to your taste! Doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks about them.

I guess when I look at them I'll know?

Everything is so new (and a bit scary), just want to make sure I get it right!

Hahaha I hadn't thought of Maxi pad!!!!!!!

Honestly you need to stop telling anyone the names you like. It's not up to them and unless they choose the name themselves they won't like it.

My due date is tomorrow and we've not told anyone the name we think/ know we're going for even though loads of people have asked including my mum 100 times.

Don't tell people your name choices - we're having twins and don't know the sexes so we have a list of about 8 names and our favourites change almost daily. We haven't told anyone the names because to be quite honest I can't be arsed with the "oh really?? I don't like that" etc and because we don't want to choose a name then when we see babies they don't suit it (happened to so many of my friends).

Our family will find out the names when babies arrive and if they don't like them then tough. My Gran always has a comment to make about a name and it's just rude. I'd never say to someone's face I don't like their child's name.

Fwiw your name choices are lovely and bugger what anyone thinks :)

It's mainly subjective and nobody's business but yours. Somebody will always have an opinion which is why you are best to reveal it afterwards.

Harvie and Maxie are great names for dogs, not for children and especially not for girls! Jordan is very 1995 and do you really want your daughter compared to Katie Price?

WoahSlowDown · 22/07/2016 10:57

Maxie is a no no
And Lukas is better spelt with a C other than that the names are ok.

I'm not sure why you are telling people.

My sons are called rupert and Dennis and people were horrible about both names when I was pregnant but now either people pretend they like them or no better than to insult my child lol

I don't see any silly names there.

When I read thread title, I was expecting to see some really outlandish names. These are all normal.

Definitely stop telling people in advance. Make your decisions privately and announce the name when it's all official. If you say too much in advance, some nosey-parkers take that an invitation to critique the name.

Tell them when it's a done deal.

Harvie and Maxie (Pad) are beyond silly.

Yup.

I'd also second Lucas with a C unless you are from somewhere where the K spelling is standard.

My DP is Scandi hence Lukas with a K
