Help with our dull names

DP and I like boring seventiesish names! We were talking names yesterday for DC2 (to be born imminently) and have a vague list, but would welcome comments or more suggestions. Please don't be offended by my description of the names if you or your DC have them, I guess I just mean we aren't into very fancy or faddy names. Lists so far..

Euan/Ewan
Sam(uel)
Fred(Erick) - though I don't like Freddy
Ford
Elliot
Keir

Hannah
Helen
Eilidh
Laura
Sam(antha)
Nina
Catherine

Some names we have excluded for various reasons: John, Mark, Andrew, Stephen, Jamie, Ross, Alexander, David, James, Fraser, Paul, Peter, Joseph, Kevin, Jessica, Louise, Kirsty, Susan, Gillian, Zoe, Chloe, Fiona, Olivia, Sophie/a.

Amazing lists! Love all the girls names and most of the boys.

My favourites are Laura, Catherine and Euan.

Elliot and Nina are my favourites from those. Don't use Fred if you don't like Freddie as I think that is inevitable with it being so popular at the moment. I also think Ford is a bit random amongst your other choices.

I'll suggest Ruth, Lewis, Lydia, Faye, Zara, Lois.

Lewis, Louis, Henry, Christopher and Matthew

Thanks both for the encouragement and suggestions. Will put some to DP later (I'm in hospital tonight for monitoring). Agree Ford is random, doubt we would use it, but DP said it as a joke yesterday when we were trying to come up with names for each letter and then we thought... maybe.

Lydia was one of my favourites for DD but friends and family put us off. Learned never to discuss names with people you know.

Karen, Lisa, Caroline, Jason, Martyn, Neil all popular in the 70s

Caroline is lovely.

I'd avoid Fred(erick) if you don't like Freddie. Ford is a bit random, reminds me of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I love Catherine. We had Katherine on our girls shortlist.

Is Sam a particular favourite? I notice you have it on both the boys and girls lists.

I like Euan. It's a real name but also quite unusual.

I don't see anything wrong with Lydia, it's nice

I really like Lydia. If you feel a connection with a name choose it.

One of my friend's told me that the name I'd chosen for a girl was better for a horse. I used it and still love it. Grin

I love Caroline, but DP doesn't Confused

Like Sam particularly for a girl but boy's name could grow on me.

I'm afraid Lydia has been destroyed for me, there's no coming back! I'm not sure DP was ever sold on it anyway.

Nice to hear the love for Euan. DP suggested yesterday and I think I like it.

I like Elliot and Samantha best!

I'll throw in Patrick for boys and Gemma for girls.

Love Samuel, Fred is OK, Keir lovely but wouldn't use if you're not Scottish (am assuming you are though). Helen is fab, and unusual these days. Ditto Laura and, to an extent, Catherine. Hannah is quite nice too. Nina is sweet and cool.

Not keen on the ones I haven't mentioned.

Such a shame about Lydia - it's beautiful and unusual.

What about Flora? There is a wee girl round here called Nora and I love it. Maggie? Martha? Elsie? Iona? Isla? Mhairi? Naomi? Amber? Bethan? Rhona? Roslyn? Zoe? Cara?

Lyle? Kyle? Harris? Struan? Stuart? Logan? Aedan? Toby? Lachlan? Aaron? Rory? Thomas? Austin? Grant?

Euan/Ewan - LOVE it
Sam(uel) - ok
Fred(Erick) - though I don't like Freddy - quite popular at the moment
Ford - makes me think of cars, sorry! Don't like it at all
Elliot - love it
Keir - like it

Hannah - I've always disliked the name Hannah, but can't justify it!
Helen - love it
Eilidh - love it, assuming you have Scottish connections (otherwise might be a bit random)
Laura - love it, due a comeback
Sam(antha) - ok
Nina - another one I dislike without good reason!
Catherine - nice

We have an Eilidh and live outside of the UK and once you explain how to spell it/pronounce it no one bats an eyelid. I usually say it's Scottish Gaelic and people say like Niamh is Irish.

Long story short that's my fave!

I know quite a few baby Keirs if that makes any difference.

What did they say about Lydia?

I got told my ds's name was better suited to an animal, it was 13 years ago and I was obviously ahead of the times ;)
His name is Oliver.

Op go with what you and dh love, never mind people putting you off.

I have a Ewan too - great name! As PP said it's a real name but uncommon enough to be unusual
