DC2 - we don't know the sex yet.
So far we have:

Boys:

  • Roman
  • Kit
  • Declan
  • Bohdi
  • Lochlan

Girls:
  • Ivy
  • Raven
  • April
  • Fallon
  • Phoebe

  • Imogen
  • Mila

Both DH and I are really bad at this naming game!!
Opinions on our lists please??

Boys:

  • Harry - really like it
  • Stanley - not keen at all
  • Roman - I think I like it. Never actually met one.
  • Kit - not sure. Like Christopher. Not convinced by this version.
  • Declan - quite like it
  • Bohdi - never heard this. I think it's ok
  • Lochlan - quite like it

Girls:
  • Ivy - really like it
  • Raven - really like it (but think it's the kind of name you need to change your name to once you know if you are raven like (looks/personality) iyswim
  • April - really like it
  • Fallon - love it
  • Phoebe - really like it
  • Autumn - really like it
  • Imogen - like it
  • Mila - really like it

One of the nicest girls' lists I've seen for ages, imo. Fantastic choices. I'd struggle to cut it but would probably go for Fallon. For boys, Harry.

Thank you for replying Smile We both like Autumn for a girl, but I'm due the first week of November Hmm so if baby comes any point in October think it would be way too cheesy Confused

Harry and Phoebe or Ivy.

Not keen on the rest (Declan or Lachlan - surely with an a not an o???) are OK if you have the right background/heritage, otherwise not, tbh - as much as I love Seren, for example, I would never use it because we're not Welsh). Roman just makes me think of that hideous creep Polanski. Fallon is the Archers and/or one of the 80s US soaps, I think.

Boys:

  • Harry - Like, classic and sensible, but lovely.
  • Stanley - Not keen, too old fashioned for me.
  • Roman - Don't like, it looks made up to me, but Ronan would be okay.
  • Kit - Too nicknamey for me, maybe short for something would be fine.
  • Declan - Love, slightly more unusual but not wacky, and a lovely classic name too.
  • Bohdi - Sounds made up, Don't like.
  • Lochlan - Alright if youre Scottish, but otherwise not keen.

Girls:
  • Ivy - Lovely, classic but also quite unusual at the moment, makes a nice change from Evie .
  • Raven - Not keen at all.
  • April - Like, but only if she is born in April
  • Fallon - Not keen, very American.
  • Phoebe - Not keen, always reminds me of Phlem when i look at it.
  • Autumn - Love! more unusual but i like it!
  • Imogen - Nice and classic, but also pretty
  • Mila - Lovely, not too popular but also not weird. Very pretty.

I would go with Declan/Harry or Autumn/Ivy :)

Boys:

  • Harry - no, way too popular. There are 4 in DD's room of 20 kids at nursery!
  • Stanley - like it
  • Roman - no.
  • Kit - like it but only if full name is Christopher. Not keen on NNs as full names
  • Declan - no. Very 90s. And Ant and Dec.
  • Bohdi - no. Autocorrect hates it too. Bit try hard, MC couple trying to go spiritual and ethereal is what it makes me think.
  • Lochlan - no. Just don't like the sound. Sounds a bit phlegmy in the middle.

Girls:
  • Ivy - ok
  • Raven - no. Makes me think of the 3 eyed raven in GoT. Plus it would be weird as anything if she had anything other than jet black hair. Imagine a blonde Raven?
  • April - ok
  • Fallon - hate it. Looks masculine and reminds me of claws. Maybe because of 'talon'?
  • Phoebe - like it
  • Autumn - no. Too American.
  • Imogen - ok
  • Mila - ok, but if you're pronouncing it 'Meela' I'm personally not keen on that sort of 'ee' sound in the middle of a name (like Mia, Nia) because it sounds a bit whiny

  • Kit
  • Lachlan

Everyone seems to really hate Bodhi for a boy!! It's one of my favourites on the list Sad
DH is Thai, and Bodhi is a Buddhist name meaning "enlightenment" or "awakening" which relates to a Buddhist concept, wherein Bodhi is synonymous with the state of nirvana, being freed from hate, greed and ego.
Definitely not a made up name!
We are toying with the idea of giving DC2 a Thai/Buddhist name because I'm Polish and we have DD a Polish name - would be nice for both sides of our family hermitage to be represented I think!

Bohdi will be a lifetime of people saying " how do you spell it" .
Choose a different Thai name perhaps, there must be thousands?

MyBreadIsEggy · 10/06/2016 14:02

Loads of people have the spelling problem though....I do. My parents gave me a Polish name with waaaaay too many consonants Sad

Bodhi makes people of a certain age think of Patrick Swayze's character on Point Break I think.

If you have a Thai DH I think it would be fine.

My top tip is to go to a park/supermarket/busy street and try yelling the names... Grin

  • Harry (really common round here though so I do think it's a bit 'boring')

My personal opinion in order of preference:
Harry
Declan
Roman
Stanley
Kit
Bohdi
Lochlan

Although I like the meaning behind Bohdi and think it would work well for your family

Imogen
April
Ivy
Phoebe
Raven
Mila
Autumn
Fallon (?)

Although Autumn and April seem like names you'd give if they were born at that time of year?

Go for

Boy: Kit or Bodhi

Girl: Autumn or Mila

Report
LadyAntonella · 10/06/2016 14:15

If you live Bodhi just use it ffs! Job done, list shortened! Smile

Don't be Sad, you asked for help eliminating names and people are eliminating them based on their personal taste - not yours. The fact you're sad to eliminate Bodhi might mean it's 'the one'...

Bodhi makes me think of Point Break (Johnny Utaaaaaaah!) but in my view that is no bad thing. It was a great film.

The name actually has meaning to you and makes sense given the Thai heritage. I love it.

And I also love Raven.

Congratulations OP! Kit (not Christopher) is on my boys shortlist, too. I love it! I would shortlist as follows:

  1. Kit
  2. Stanley, I love old fashioned names.

Sorry, I don't like any of the others. I love the sentiment of bodhi, my father is buddhist, but I wouldn't chose it as a name. Spelling is an issue, and it might just be difficult to bear. Roman is by far my least favourite and sounds pretentious. Harry is lively but there are gazillions of them, perhaps good for a middle name though.

  1. Fallon. Lovely, unusual but not weird, strong sounding.
  2. April. I've always liked this name. The best of the 'month' names IMO.
  3. Autumn. Yes it is a bit American, but I still love it. It was on my long list.
  4. Mila

Imogen and Phoebe are nice, but 10 a penny. Ivy is a close runner-up to Mila, but again not uncommon. Raven is awful, sorry, and possibly a bit of a mean thing to do to a child IMO.

I love Autumn!!! Please don't let the fact that she'd be born in the autumn season put you off, DH has vetoed it for DD2 because she'll be a summer baby and he thinks it would be really silly to call a June baby Autumn!
