I haven't heard it before but it means blackbird. I'm assuming it's pronounced Low-nan....

I think a blackbird is Lon dubh. I have never heard this name before but if you like it, go for it!

It means little blackbird. Nice name, and pretty unusual. I work in the Irish language business, and it's not a name I'd come across often.

I'm Irish and have never heard of it

Sorry pressed post too soon!

Are you sure it's not Ronan you're thinking of?

Jeanniejampots80 Tue 31-May-16 19:03:56

Also Irish and have never heard of it

MrsJayy Tue 31-May-16 19:04:26

People will hear Ronan everytime you say it

LillyVonSchtupp Tue 31-May-16 19:05:18

Another Irish and I've never heard of it.

I think you'd be setting him up to be misheard as Ronan or Conan for his entire life tbh.

MrsJayy Tue 31-May-16 19:05:20

Or Logan i dont like it

MyBeard Tue 31-May-16 19:07:16

I went to school with a lonan. Pronounced low-nan. No one struggled to pronounce it or got it confused with another name

LadyAntonella Tue 31-May-16 19:09:54

I've never heard it either and I'm Irish. It might get mistaken for Ronan, Conan or possibly Logan if that bothers you at all. Otherwise I think it's ok. The 'lone' or 'low' sound is a little bit off putting to my ear, but it's a nice name.

TreeBird16 Tue 31-May-16 19:13:25

Also Irish and never heard of it.
Is it an anglicised spelling? It's a bit too "Shawn" for my taste

TreeBird16 Tue 31-May-16 19:14:56

I would pronounce it Lo-naa-n btw

Bumski Tue 31-May-16 19:21:05

Nope, deffo Lonan, a few Saint Lonans and it's also a place name. I guess it's just quite unusual!

DailyMailYobos Tue 31-May-16 19:25:37

I'm Irish and had never heard of it so I googled it. The correct spelling is Lonán which is pronounced Luh-nawn. You're missing a fada in your spelling. It is nice, I might keep it for my list, if we have another baby smile

LonestarStateOfMind Tue 31-May-16 19:27:49

It's a lovely name.

Artandco Tue 31-May-16 19:29:41

I haven't heard of it. If I saw I would assume 'lon- Ann'

Bringmewineandcake Tue 31-May-16 19:30:28

I like it! Never heard it before.

Bumski Tue 31-May-16 19:38:11

The only very small things that put me off are 'Lonan the loner' or the fact if you rearrange the letters it's 'o anal'.... Possible teenage boys piss taking, or am I overthinking this?!

LadyAntonella Tue 31-May-16 20:18:29

The correct spelling is Lonán which is pronounced Luh-nawn

I really love this^^ pronunciation. Not that I'm an Irish expert or anything - I can barely speak a word of Irish!

It's absolutely lovely though.

MyBeard Tue 31-May-16 20:35:41

You're over thinking it! Never happened to the one I was at school with smile

MumOnACornishFarm Wed 01-Jun-16 13:31:06

I always thought this was pronounced low-nun or low-nan, I would never think to say it luh-nawn and I can't imagine many would, outside of Ireland that is. I'm not mad about it personally. I prefer the scottish Lochlan/Lachlan, which is in a similar vein.
