We have had a few raised eyebrows when we have said DD (due in July) will be called Effie, FIL said "why can't you pick a normal name for once?" (DS is Rudy and its like marmite).

DH and I love both the names we have picked for our children but I just wondered what MNs views are on Effie? Is it another marmite name?

Effie is a cat's name, imo.

Rudy is fantastic though!

I can seeing her being called 'effing' at school. Do you want that for your child?

ShmooBooMoo Mon 09-May-16 11:30:04

My first thought is effie offie, sorry...

RiverTam Mon 09-May-16 11:30:13

Effie Gray. Bit wispy/fey/flimflammy for me.

It's cute but only with a full name behind it. And the teasing potential is problematic.

I love it, but then I tend to love marmite names.

Rudi and Effie work very well together!

Short for Elizabeth?

Is it another marmite name?

Who cares?!

This is the most important thing you've written.

(Fwiw I love Effie!)

I like it - i also like Elfie and Elvie (short for Elvira)

MitzyLeFrouf Mon 09-May-16 12:49:23

It's one of those names that gets mentioned a lot on MN but I agree with RiverTam that's it's a bit wispy and flimsy. I don't mind shortened names as full names but this one seems very nickname-y.

I love it.

Too close to sounding sweary, as well as being nicknamey (a cockney Ethel?)

It reminds me of the scene in Mrs Doubtfire when they are talking about sex 'brace yourself Effie' being the fictitious Mr Doubtfire's version of foreplay.

Swear word and Hungar games spring to mind.

Love it! Would probably also give her a longer name though and use it as a nn.

Ha ha at your FIL grin
Love Rudy.
I do like Effie, but as others have said it's bit .. eff off effie, effing hell... etc.

I always loved Marnie but then you could say "moody marnie..." tbh, someone will object to pretty much whatever name you choose. So just go with what you love!

Twitterqueen Mon 09-May-16 14:13:16

Ref longer name to abbreviate.... I do love Persephone. so she could be ephie for short! (or Percy)

Do you mean short for Euphemia ?

HeffalumpHistory Mon 09-May-16 15:09:38

I do quite like it. Can see kids in school calling her sweary words though.

Also makes me think of take the high road(if you're Scottish you may know Effie. She was also in Balamory. Now dead)

Thanks for everyone's opinions, it's a mixed bag as I thought might be the case grin

Effie won't be short for anything to all those asking.
