Hi, we were all set on the name Summer but we told my in laws a few days ago and their reaction wasn't good and now we're having a wobble.

What are your honest thoughts on it?

Thanks

Thank you. I know they can be quite old fashioned (they thought it was outrageous someone they knew called their son Zach) but we hoped they'd like it and their reaction made us feel like a bad choice.

  • if it is I'd rather know now!

It's a very pretty name and not too uncommon, that said my grandmother once scoffed at hearing it when she had a child herself who she named after a month....

I'm due in the autumn and do quite like Autumn as a name but I don't think it goes with surname or with other dcs names so I probably won't

My honest opinion is that you shouldn't have told the in laws!!

Anyway, Summer is a lovely name, I had on my list too, I think it's great, however I put it into the name genie and it just doesn't go with a second name. Try it yourself, it's on a website called "baby name genie" then click, BABY NAME TEST DRIVE. It's very helpful! www.babynamegenie.com/baby-name-test-drive.php

If you like Summer, wait until she arrives and go for it. And don't tell anyone your names again in the meantime! It's hard enough for 2 people to decide on a name. Best of luck.

It's perfectly nice! Smile. Agree with pps, don't discuss names seriously with anyone other than DP imho.

And this is why you should never tell anyone your baby name ideas before baby is born! You'll never find a name everyone likes!

Personally Summer is not a name I like but it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! If you love the name, use it!

Sophronia · 02/05/2016 09:15

Personally I'm not keen either, but I agree that if you love it you should use it.

Report
pilates · 02/05/2016 09:31

I think you should still use it.

Ignore them, it's none of their business. You don't need their approval.

Nice name but there's a girl at dd's school called summer...she gets teased a bit, all light hearted stuff like calling her winter etc..but I'm sure it would get annoying after a while

Report
SuburbanRhonda · 02/05/2016 09:35

Use it if you like it.

There are three in our small primary school.

I've always really liked it. I'd be unlikely to use it though because it wouldn't go with the middle name I'd definitely be using for a girl (my mum's name, we lost her a few years back) or surname.

If you like it, use it. In laws will come round. I hated my niece's name when sister announced it. Now I love it because it's associated with her and she's awesome Grin

I think it's one of those Marmite names that people either like or they don't. And it makes me think of rich teenage girls from California in American TV shows. (The OC, anyone?)

But think if you introduce your daughter as Summer, anyone who doesn't like it will probably think, "Not very keen on that name" rather than, "You called her WHAT? Poor child!"

I wouldn't use it myself, but I think it's quite pretty, and she's not going to find it embarrassing or be bullied by other children for having a stupid name when she's older. Your family will get used to it. My cousin has an unusual name which made us all think, "What? Really?" when she was born, but now she's 21 and we couldn't imagine her being called anything else.

If anyone makes any rude remarks, remind them that the Queen's granddaughter-in-law is called Autumn. Wink

Don't tell the in-law's anything! Keep your names to yourself till she is born (we are not telling anyone for this exact reason. You should have heard what my in-laws said about our son name - Jack (and that to me is a pretty inoffensive name) it was horrible! Never again!)

Anyway, Summer is sweet. It's a soft, gentle sounding name. I know of two 6 year old Summers and a colleges daughter is called Summer Rose. Nothing wrong with the name and you love it! Summer Charlotte? Summer Matilda? Summer Elizabeth?

It's not to my taste, but I think it's a perfectly fine choice.

Report
Ragwort · 02/05/2016 11:55

I'm not keen on it - but I know a Summer, an Autumn and a Winter Grin - I think they all sound mildly ridiculous, but that's just my opinion.

I think it's a lovely name.

I like it. This is why you shouldn't tell people before DC arrive!

It's a great name, tell the in laws to do one.

Thank you. Its nice to get a feeling for what other people think even if it's been a bit of a mixed bag of responses.

From the reaction we got you'd think we'd have said "moon unit" or something. At least no one has said anything really negative.

I'm not keen on the name Summer personally but I can think of three off the top of my head so it is definitely not a name to raise eyebrows or get worked up about. It is your baby and you should pick a name you love, within reason, irrespective of other people's views. They will probably grow to like it - perhaps they think it is very 'out there ' as it would have been thirty years or so ago when they were choosing names!

My niece is called summer. It's a lovely name and people often comment on how pretty it is.

Have the name you and Dp like. It's nothing to do with anyone else....and parents will have a lot of opinions re parenting so you'll need to get used to ignoring them haha.

I like it (we've got Winter on our list. I may yet go off it.)
