Just wondered if anyone with a Merryn would share her nickname? We've got as far as Merry, but wondering if there are any alternatives.

Don't have one but it makes me think of game of thrones...

I didn't know about the Game of Thrones link but now I've googled it looks like a pretty unpleasant character. ConfusedSad Not sure if it puts me off the name.

Aww sorry it's the only time I've heard the name that's all. I think if you love a name you should use it anyway Smile

Are you looking for ideas of nicknames you could call her or trying to weed out bad ones

......Sorry......Sad

Ideas for nicknames mainly, but it would also be good to know if there are likely to be any that we hate! Smile

I'm inclined to agree charley - feel a bit deflated because I really thought that we might have found 'the one' with Merryn.

I'm sorry I think it's a pretty name for a girl, I feel bad for mentioning GOT now!

Please don't Luna. I'm glad to know about connotations both good and bad. Smile

Look, GOT is just a flash in the pan. No matter how popular a thing is, it does die. Who talks about Lost now?

And Ser Merryn is a very very minor character. The only reason I thought of it is because I've spent far too much time reading those books. I doubt the average viewer would have paid much heed to the name of a minor evil character.

Sorry to piss on your chips.

Also he's dead now anyway, so won't be mentioned any more! Grin

Gah! I clicked because I'm a Merryn and love my name, and am now gutted that GoT is using a version of my name (can you tell I only watched the first series and hated it).

That's true, GOT won't be a thing all of her life. Just don't want to name her after some violent, rapey sociopath, that's all. WinkGrin

Love, love, love the name Merryn! I had a friend at school called Merryn who moved away to Waybridge. I would have used it but it doesn't go with our surname (curse you, DH). It's a beautiful name.

I wanted Merrin for our DD, but DP didn't. I think it's a lovely name and would have shortened it to Wren as a NN.

My best friend is a Merryn! She's just called Merryn or MJ. It's a lovely old Cornish name (and she is a lovely old Cornish friend)!. I've never seen GoT, so would not associate anything with it.

I love the name Merryn! Nn Merry is lovely too.

I have never heard of the GoT character and I used to love the program and watched it a lot (for the first few series anyway - it made me feel queasy after that. I just can't stomach it). I never read the books though, so maybe the character is more prevalent in them.

Most people won't have heard of the GoT character I don't think. I might recognise the face, but wouldn't know the name. I'm sure even a lot of GoT fans would be the same.

I hope it doesn't put you off the name as it is lovely. Smile

Most people won't have a clue who ser Merryn

The only Merryn I know is male, but for a girl I'd probably shorten it to Meri.

Oops didn't mean to include that last line!

I have a Merryn. We don't shorten it - Merryn is a great name anyway and it really suits my daughter.

babybonbon · 01/05/2016 18:13

The Merryn love has made me feel a bit better about it. Smile I think it is still our front-runner, despite the GOT link. Perhaps we don't need to worry too much about nicknames - it isn't a massively long name anyway so doesn't need to be shortened.
