I need some suggestions for girls middle names out of this baddish bunch

DD1 has two middle names. Both are slightly changed versions of her two grandmothers first names - imagine Helena changed to Helen, Raquelle changed to Rachel etc.

If we have another DD, I'm fairly set on Margaret as a first name, as both DH's grandmothers coincidentally had this name, though they were both known as shortenings.

I'd like to have middle names that reflect our family heritage again, and I'd prefer two so that it's the same as DD. But the names from either side shock

Beatrice Ellen - the Ellen is pretty much a definite, but Beatrice doesn't flow with Margaret for me (especially as we have a two-syllable surname too)
Vera May - May's ok, but a bit ubiquitous as a middle name at the moment

Is there anything else we could manage than Margaret Ellen May?

I like Margaret Ellen May too, think it's very pretty!

I think it sounds nice, but I'm not 100% won over like I was with DD's names.

I third Margaret Ellen May. It's lovely.

Why not slightly tweak them as you did with your first daughter, and have something like Margaret Elinor Maya, or Margaret Eleanor Amy (anagram of May)?

ScarlettOHaraHamilton Thu 31-Mar-16 15:40:30

Ooh, I do love Elinor...

BoboBunnyH0p Thu 31-Mar-16 15:41:09

How about shortening Raymond to Rae, so Margaret Ellen Rae.

florascotianew Thu 31-Mar-16 16:06:54

It's not that uncommon to give girls (or boys) a second middle name that is a family surname, rather than a third first name . Douglas and Sidney can both be surnames as well as first names. Therefore .... what about Margaret Ellen (or Elinor) Sidney? Or Margaret Ellen/Elinor Sidonie, if you prefer a female first name.

You could stick with the altered family names as with your DD1...

Raymond could be changed to Ramona/Raymona
May could be changed to Maya or Mabel/Mabell/Maybelle

You could go with a combination of something like Margaret Ramona Maybelle?

What's your middle name? You could use that. If I have a DD I'd quite like us to share a middle name.

AnotherEmma Thu 31-Mar-16 16:33:50

Reginald could become Regina
But I think ideally girls should be named after women in the family - men's surnames get passed down anyway.

ScarlettOHaraHamilton Thu 31-Mar-16 16:36:09

I don't have a middle name, my parents didn't love me enough grin

How did I not think of Ramona? And Rae would make a nice change to Mae.

Regina is my SIL's middle name and we're not exactly each others fans, so unfortunately that one is off the cards.

AnotherEmma Thu 31-Mar-16 16:37:59

Lol at "not exactly each other's fans" grin

Are the surnames any good?

ScarlettOHaraHamilton Thu 31-Mar-16 16:46:31

Not much of an option, as I haven't changed my name and DD has DH's name already.

Abecedario Thu 31-Mar-16 16:46:50

Love Margaret Ellen Rae, think that's my favourite combination.

Or could use Bea as a shortening of Beatrice?

Horseshoe1 Thu 31-Mar-16 16:48:30

I was going to suggest Margaret Ellen Rae too - or Margaret Elinor Rae. V pretty.

NameAgeLocation Thu 31-Mar-16 16:48:56

I meant the grandmothers' birth surnames smile

InternationalHouseofToast Thu 31-Mar-16 16:52:56

Are there any other names another generation back? DS has his great grandmother's maiden name as a middle name and if he'd been a DD she'd have had the shared first name of both great grandmothers as her middle name.

Sophronia Thu 31-Mar-16 16:57:11

Margaret Ellen Vera
Margaret Ellen Ramona
Margaret Ramona May
Margaret Eleanor May
Margaret Sidonie May
Margaret Sidonie Ellen
Margaret Ellen Sidonia

Soooo many pretty names in that bunch and you've picked Margaret as the first name?! I'd have it as a MN, personally, and go for one of the others as the first name...granny names have definitely come back but Margaret just isn't very nice as a first name. sad

For example Ellen Margaret is gorgeous, but Margaret Ellen will probably just leave your DD wondering why you gave her the frumpy name first.

birchygoo Thu 31-Mar-16 17:03:23

Margaret Mary Ellen ..? Rolls of the tongue

Although nothing at all wrong with Margaret Ellen may

Sophronia Thu 31-Mar-16 17:03:58

You could also have Verity as an alternative to Vera, or Beatrix instead of Beatrice.
