I love this name, have heard it a few times but am still unsure what it's short for, if anything? So, do you like it and do you know what it's short for?

JeanGenie23 Sat 12-Mar-16 23:01:17

Prunella maybe?

I quite like Nella, prefer Nell but I like that it isn't a run of the mill name

Scarydinosaurs Sat 12-Mar-16 23:01:59

Eleanor nn Nella?

candykane25 Sat 12-Mar-16 23:03:33

Prunella makes me think of prunes and constipation.

hownottofuckup Sat 12-Mar-16 23:05:11

I don't know what it's short for but I think it's lovely, and I would have thought it could easily stand alone.

Nelly Last, Housewife 49, was nee Nellie something, but I've never read a full first name.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard Sat 12-Mar-16 23:08:51

Autocorrect, sorry *Nella

I read a book called The Miniaturist and the main character is Petronella and known as Nella.

ladygracie Sat 12-Mar-16 23:15:55

It can be short for Antonella which is Italian.

ladygracie Sat 12-Mar-16 23:16:15

And I do like it.

hownottofuckup Sat 12-Mar-16 23:16:57

I loved Petronella in The Miniaturist

MitzyLeFrouf Sun 13-Mar-16 01:38:34

Petronella from The Miniaturist.

The worst book I've read in a long time. Seriously, what a load of old nonsense that was.

MitzyLeFrouf Sun 13-Mar-16 01:39:36

It was so shit I left a one star review on Amazon.

Don't buy The Miniaturist people!

puthyjip43 Sun 13-Mar-16 01:57:30

I just keep thinking Nutella..

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose Sun 13-Mar-16 14:16:37

My grandma's name, I love it. She was Leonella on her birth certificate but always went by Nella. (She was Italian btw, not that it really matters)

MaudGonneMad Sun 13-Mar-16 14:17:59

I thought it was unadulterated shite as well Mitzy. Don't understand the praise for it.

originalmavis Sun 13-Mar-16 14:18:22

I like Leonie. That could stretch to Nella.

Vixxfacee Mon 14-Mar-16 16:31:00

I know an Ornella

HumTiddlyTum Mon 14-Mar-16 16:35:25

Nelly can be short for Helen.

centigrade451 Mon 14-Mar-16 17:23:01

Nella means 'in' or 'inside the' or 'in the' in Italian.

BendydickCuminsnatch Mon 14-Mar-16 17:34:21

My nickname in school because it's my maiden name backwards grin

I love Nell, Nella I don't know... Makes me think of Nutella and vanilla, not necessarily bad!

minipie Mon 14-Mar-16 20:29:05

In theory, Nell can be a nn for any name beginning with "El", such as Eleanor, because it comes from people saying "mine Eleanor" (back in 17th century and before) which got shortened to "mine El" or "my Nell".

And Nella is just a variant on Nell.

So you could pick any "El" name - Eleanor, Elinor, Ellen, Eloise, Elodie, Elena, Elspeth...

Helen and Helena also work, as "mine Helen" also became Nell.

The names with "nella" in them work too of course.

Nell and Nella both lovely IMO. Usually short for Eleanor/Elinor or Helen in this country. I know lots of Nells for some reason and all are great strong women smile
