Girl's names......what else would I like?

ZiggyZigZag · 24/02/2016 01:45

I'm stuck......I like somewhat 'older' names but not top twenty names though top 20+ are fine. I just don't really 'love' any names though. DD1 (age 4) is Charlotte (family nn Lottie).

To give an idea of the type of names I like - so far on the list are:
Harriet - DH is unsure about this and even more unsure about Hattie. Plus Lottie and Hattie sound ridiculous.
Imogen - waver between liking it and thinking its viewed as a bit aspirational
Isobel - very safe like DD1
Iriis - but I am starting to go off this name)
India - this is a very recent favourite so I'm on the fence about it).

DH has put forward the names
Tamsin - I waver between loving it and wondering if its a bit hippyish?
Constance. I don't like the thought of having two girls sharing the first initial so I have ruled this one out.

Please feel free to slate the list. As I said I like the names but I don't love them.

My DP loves Imogen but I'm not a fan as I don't like the shortenings of it.

I think I have similar taste to you. I like elegant grown up names but not too posh sounding. I have an Anna and a Beth. I also love Catherine and all its derivatives (Katie particularly), Eleanor, Eilidh, Louisa, Jenna,

Thanks everyone, I'm so glad I posted. Some great names and some food for thought there.

There is an Anna in the family already. Sylvia (nn Sylvie) was the main contender for DD1's name.

Elizabeth (Beth) is very lovely.

DH has agreed Constance wouldn't be the best with Charlotte but is still quite taken with Tamsin.

So now on the list -

Imogen
Beth
Tamsin

What is the general opinion on these?

I have, in 20yrs, taught 2 Tamsins. Both lovely girls, but, for some reason lots of other children struggle to get their tongues around it and both were regularly called, Tasmin instead of Tamsin. One didn't seem to bother but the other hated it especially as she was still being called Tasmin in Y6.

I think your taste is similar to mine so here is my long list and at the moment the top choice is Charlotte nn Lottie!

Clara
Bronwyn
Bryony
Charlotte
Daisy
Elizabeth - Lizzie
April
Felicity
Freya
Abigail
Anna
Gwen
Harriet
Imogen
Isobel
Lydia
Phoebe
Tabitha
Violet

Of your shortlist Imogen is my favourite.

Freya, Verity, Philippa (nn Pippa), Georgina, Mollie, Romilly, Frances, Felicity (nn Fliss), Beatrice, Matilda, Victoria, Elinor.

DH likes Verity but its not one of my favourites.

We both really like Matilda but not any of the nicknames so ruled it out. I mentioned it to somebody and they immediately said 'Tilly'. I know we can use the name Matilda ourselves but we can't control what other people say or what she would like herself as a teen .

It looks like Imogen is the favourite then?

Beth and Tamsin are looking very unpopular. I like both of them. Oh dear maybe my taste is just all a bit safe and meh.

Tamsin is my favourite of the three on your new shortlist, although I quite like all of them. I would never consider Tamsin as 'hippyish'.

longestlurkerever · 25/02/2016 09:30

Ha well I vote Beth! But mine is a Bethan really, rather than an Elizabeth, mostly because I definitely wanted her to be Beth, rather than Elizabeth or Libby or Liz. I do like Imogen. Tamsin is OK. They both sound a teensy bit too upper middle class to my ear, but nothing wrong with that, really if you're happy in your skin.

Ziggy completely get what you mean about seeing Imogen as a bit "aspirational" to me thats more polite than my instant reaction- of twee, rather plain but trying to sound grander than you really are. Much prettier suggestions on this thread than that, and don't think Imogen has come up that often as peoples favourite?

Report
ZiggyZigZag · 25/02/2016 15:48

Ummm....Beth is really pretty.

Tamsin upper middle class really? I didn't think that. I think I thought it might be hippyish due to the My Summer of Love film.

Imogen on the other hand, I waver between thinking its plain or its aspirational. Neither of which really want....but I think it is a nice name.

I haven't heard the name Amanda for a very long time, it isn't really my taste but I don't think its not a nice name either. There are too many Lucys where I am. I'm bored of it but Lucinda was on the shortlist for DD1 as well. I really like Daphne as well but can't break it from the Frasier connection :).

So all of you replying have a very good idea of what I like!
