Scottish folks - how to pronounce Beatrice?

(59 Posts)

Beatrice is my mother's middle name and is on our shortlist for girls names. I'm dragging my heels as I'm not entirely sure how I should be pronouncing it.

DH is English and is very clear how he would pronounce it. I'm Scottish and we live in Scotland so want to be sure I pronounce it the way it commonly would be.

So is it:
Bee-ah-trice or
Beer-trice?

Help!

Emzyt1 Tue 23-Feb-16 14:54:16

Beer-triss here too

Decanter Tue 23-Feb-16 14:54:57

Bee-a-trice. I'm Scottish. The -a- is very quickly pronounced.

Bee-a-trisss - lovely name

Bee-triss, no "r" sound which is fortunate as my r's roll for miles! I know I'm probably saying it wrong.

dementedpixie Tue 23-Feb-16 15:00:12

Bee-a-triss

putthePuffindown Tue 23-Feb-16 15:04:36

Hmm seems like there is no defiantive answer for Scots. Does it matter if you're northern or southern?

We're Midlothian if the makes a difference to pronunciation??

dementedpixie Tue 23-Feb-16 16:25:44

I'm north lanarkshire. Decide which way you want to pronounce it and then tell people that's what it is.

SunnyL Tue 23-Feb-16 18:39:56

Yes that's exactly what DH has been saying all along.

Thanks for your help all!

Where I am from in Scotland we say Berr-Triss

JakeyB Tue 23-Feb-16 20:53:07

I'm astounded at the Scottish people saying they add an "r" sound after "Bee"! I've never heard that in my life! I say Beet-riss, and I've heard some say Bee-a-triss, but never "Beer". confused

I'm in the Lothians.

fudgepillow Tue 23-Feb-16 21:22:27

Beer truss....N Lanarkshire child hood, now in England and I would say bee-a-tress (probs)

MuddlePuddle Tue 23-Feb-16 22:14:17

I say Beer-triss too, no idea where the extra 'r' comes from though 🤔

xXjunebugXx Tue 23-Feb-16 23:07:14

I meant Beer-Triss....typo, sorry!

I'm with Jakey ! I have never seen so many non-rhotic Scots in one place! shock

(I'm from NI, but would expect Scots to say Bee-uh-triss or Bee-triss)

badtime Wed 24-Feb-16 12:52:59

Or do you ACTUALLY say 'beer', not just like how the English people write things down to show how they modify their vowels shock ?

MrsBungle Wed 24-Feb-16 12:54:39

I'm shocked at the beer-triss responses. I've never heard an r in it. I would say bee-a-triss (borders)

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve Wed 24-Feb-16 12:59:44

I say 'Bee-triss'. I'm from central Scotland.

KayTee87 Wed 24-Feb-16 13:01:15

Bee-a-triss here too. There's no r before the t, never heard it pronounced beer-triss

KayTee87 Wed 24-Feb-16 13:02:25

Very quick 'a' sound though btw
