Name decided - to MIL's disgust.

So our daughter finally arrived 10 days late in the car park outside the hospital! Thank you to everyone on here who helped us to choose her name, which we love. She will be Sylvie and registered as Sylvia. We just ran it by my MIL who hates it and was very rude about the whole thing. Mainly because she had already decided we were calling her Martha and has been banging on about it for months. Trouble is we don't like it!
Now we need a middle name to go with Sylvia so we can officially announce her name and drive it home to MIL that she's not getting her way. Any help with this? Nothing too popular please and also we think one syllable names work best with Sylvia. Xx

A two syllable name with the emphasis on the second syllable would go well. Sylvia is a really pretty name, I'm glad it's coming back.

What is MILs name?

I agree with Rose, it goes lovely with both Sylvia and Sylvie (which is very pretty btw!).

No way should you use a name you don't like. We had this when my youngest son was born as my MIL wanted him named after FIL who had died while I was pregnant. His name had become extremely popular at that time though and we weren't fond of it anyway, but she wasn't happy with us not choosing it regardless.

Rose, or Grace?

I think one syllable would sound best.

I like Sylvie Mae or May. Sounds beautiful.
Congratulations and ignore MIL. Not her choice to make. She's being very rude to criticise your name choice.

My MIL hates my DD name and even told all of her side of the family the baby was called a nickname of the name 😡 We even got a silver box with the nickname on! And the distant relatives were really embarrassed when they relised they said hello kitty and we said meet Katherine ( not the real name) I can't bring myself to use the nickname now because of mil. Sylvia/ sylvie is lovely! X

Any other names that MIL dislikes ?

More seriously, what about a name from your side of the family ?

Joy? I really liked the idea of Joy for my second daughter - her first name has 3 syllables and I love the meaning of the name Joy but hubby wasn't so keen.

Sylvia Joy would work nicely, or I agree Rose is beautiful.

I really liked Sylvia/ie too but hubby preferred the names we chose in the end.

If you are going to call her Sylvie why are you bothering with "Sylvia?"

I used to work with a Sylvie and always thought it was a lovely name. I think her father was Danish.

I think you have to use a middle name MIL won't like too or she will might start calling DD by her middle name - seen that on mumsnet a few times Angry

Agree with PP that Sylvie Grace is nice.

Congratulations on her (rather exciting) arrival. Flowers

BTW my friend gave birth in the car on the way to the hospital . The birth certificate actually says place of birth as " in car, on X road , town name " .

Her MIL complained that it wasn't a very naice area

Love Sylvia Jane or Beth or Amy - all the other 1 syllable names are so popular as middle names now, though, that I wouldn't choose May, Rose or Grace, though they are all lovely.

Pushing out the boat to 2 syllable names, how about Sylvia Mary or Sylvia Frances or Sylvia Lauren?
