Baby names

Large immediate family ruling out names. Help!

sugarplumfairy28 · 14/02/2016 20:22

Both DH and I have large immediate families, and we don't want overlap. Boys names are a pain anyway and we want something uncommon but not already in use.

I'm liking Dexter, but not sure if this is phase, and Felix, possibly Archer. Nothing seems to be jumping out. Any suggestions along these lines. Please no James, George or Harrys.

Well, you only need one name (or two at a pinch) - why not just go with Dexter? IMO it's a fab name and very flexible.

I know two Dexters and it is a lovely name.

DH isn't entirely sold on Dexter, and has no strong feelings against Felix, although that is my favourite. Middle names aren't a problem, as they would be family names.

Seriously?!? You must have the biggest family in the world!!

If you have a large family surely there will be crossover of names? My DH has the exact same first and surname as his direct cousin... And there are no problems about it at all.

Amazing that so many of the "taken" names are the exact ones suggested! I hope that means we're on the right lines?

Definitely along the right lines biscuit, a couple are our cat names Lennox and Orson and Oscar is one of our dogs, and Baxter is DS's most treasured teddy. My MIL is Jude (Judith). Parker, Preston and Spencer are my aunt's surnames and Cole is DH's nephews surname which is under review due to family issues. My family is mostly made up of boys, the rest are either my cousins, or nephews. I really like Nico but his my oldest cousin and another cousins son. Same for Kai and we already have 2 nephew Maxes. With quite a few duplicates we want something unique, as my Grandad pointed out it's sometimes upsetting to get confused and send birthday cards to the wrong one. DC are Miller Francis and Ottilie Debra Ann, all are family names, DS both our Dads, and DD is my Great Nan and then both our mums.

My family is also made up of some lovable hippies and Germans.

manic I have 28 cousins 14 each side and a brother! Despite that being a big number we are all actually quite close. We are also overrun with boys lol.

I like a lot of your names, we ended up with a Franklin, would that work? Frank is pretty cool for when he's older and Frankie when he's tiny.

Have an uncle Frank who my parents are not on good terms with and we have a Frankie, which is admittedly really cute, but the bad relationship would taint the name.

Willem. Like William, but not.

Hudson - met a cool one recently.

Report

We have a Cameron, Phoenix and Zane but close friends this time lol Guy is my Uncle and Jackson another Uncle's surname. I do quite like Blake, I also like Blaine but DH doesn't! Not overally keen on the others.

William is my FIL and DS already has his middle name so don't want double up on naming after the same person. DH doesn't like places so Hudson and Camden are out. I quite like Rex but DH is insisting it's a dog's name. Felix would be kinda ironic anyway as we are known as the cat people, having 10 and all.

OP tell your Dh no such thing as "cats" "dogs" "guinea pig" name, we have moved on since the start of the century when pets only were called a handful of names, they are called anything and everything these days and discounting names for such an outdated and frankly bonkers reason is madness in itself!

Love Felix!

Dexter and Rex are cute too. Sounds like you like names with an x?

Others I can think of: Maddox, Hendrix, Huxley, Dixon, Braxton, Jaxon (Jackson), Texas, Xander, Pax, Knox

I can kind of see where you husband is coming from with Rex - but think it's only a problem when combined with Felix. Either are fine alone. I once taught a class which had Rex, Felix and 2 Kittys - there was a standing joke about us being the Petshop Class.

It seems like the alternative/slightly American sounding market has been well and truly cornered in your family!

So how about going more 'mainstream but underused':
Adam, Anthony, Adrian, Alistair, Christian, David, Edmund, Gareth, Gregory, Ian, John, Joel, Kenneth, Michael, Martin, Paul, Richard, Robert, Simon, Stephen, Timothy

Or more alternative on a nature type theme:
Rowan, Robin, Jay, Birch, Blue, Skyler, Bear, Orion, River, Storm, Red
