What do you think of this for a girls name? :) And what else might I like?

I love Flora and would have considered it but for some reason, I really don't like the nn Flo so was put off by the risk they might end up called that. Gorgeous name though.

Other possibilities could be:

Nora
Clara
Orla
Ruby
Gina
Nina
Florence
Cara

Hope this helps x

I am really sorry to say this, but you might want to consider the playground taunts that a name is likely to inspire.

Flora = spreads easily.

(heard it in the playground not long ago. Again, sorry)

I think Flora is lovely, very lovely indeed. I'm sure others will be along to say do't do it because of the spread but I wouldn't let that put you off.

I've never heard the 'spreads easily' tag to be honest, although I don't really watch a lot of TV.

I know I'm being really fussy but none of the above names are really to my taste!

Flora is a pretty name, but the margarine association is very strong.

Others to consider: Polly, Elsie, Doris, Maude, Beulah, Pearl, Ethel, Nell, Tilly

Kids will make a nickname out of everything - I know Laura's who suffered the Flora spread jibe just because of the rhyme.

Personally I love the name Flora, and Florrie too.

For me I can't get past the old margarine tag line "spreads like butter". Whilst you might not watch tv, many people do and will have that as a point of reference.

I still remember when it was 'the margerine for men'.

I like it because I'm a huge Jilly Cooper fan, not because of the margarine connection Wink

Also love Imogen and Georgia, can't think of anything else but hope you find the right name!

Flora is gorgeous.

Freya
Marnie
Sadie
Tessa
Nancy

But I don't think you'll find a better name than Flora.

The only names I like from the above suggestions are Anna and Sadie! Olivia is quite nice but I know hundreds.

I think Flora is a beautiful name.
Personally, the unfortunate uses of the noun would stop me using it. That said, the more popular the name becomes, the more people will disassociate it with those uses.

I love it! There was a Flora in Byker Grove back in the day and I've been a fan of the name since then.

I love it. I'd never avoid a name just because of the possibility of a few silly teases on the playground.

I think you do sometimes have to accept there might be questions asked and outrage when you don't call your child Evie or Harry like everybody else :)

Sorry to say I don't like the sound of it (always makes me think of floor) and the only thing I associate it with is the margarine.

But I know a lot of posh people love it and use it, so maybe I am just too common!

Report
thankthoseluckystars · 19/01/2016 07:56

Hehe I'm not posh!

I love it and it's on my shortlist if DC2 is a girl. We may not generally like the same sorts of names, but for what it's worth the others on my list are:

Romily
Eliza
Sylvie
Florence
Isobel
Elise

I love it, it's a beautiful name Smile

It was my grandma's name and is DD's middle name, so I am biased.

If you love it, go for it!

Hmm, I know a Flora who now goes by her middle name now due to the teasing. The 'spreads easily' became too much for her at secondary school. I know that children will pick up on all sorts of things when bullying others but why would you give them an obvious reason to make your child the target of bullies?

Report

I've never ever heard the "spreads easily" jibe.
