Just came to me (while watching the Christmas episode of call the midwife)

I love it!

Opinions please?

BossWitch Sat 16-Jan-16 21:39:41

I like it - but I love it pronounced an-ton-ee-ah! Think you would need an accenty thingy somewhere for that. 'My Antonia' was the title of a novel I read at uni, the name has always stuck with me.

Sophronia Sat 16-Jan-16 21:39:47

Love it. Don't like the potential nn Toni though.

Makes me think of Captains Corellis Mandolin.

It's definitely not horrendous, but I'm not sure I like it either.

mrsschu Sat 16-Jan-16 21:47:53

Like it. I know a 5 year old Antonia.

Lovelilies2 Sat 16-Jan-16 21:53:09

Yes, it would be pronounced An-tohn-eea.

Would people say An-TON-eea?
Don't like that confused

Lovelilies2 Sat 16-Jan-16 21:53:49

Nn 'Nea'?
If a NN was needed

timelytess Sat 16-Jan-16 21:57:26

Great. No need for a nickname.

villainousbroodmare Sat 16-Jan-16 21:59:59

You want it pronounced An-to-NEE-ah? I would have said An-TONE-ee-a.
I like it, it's elegant but I reckon your preferred pronounciation is not the most common one. Also you don't really get to choose nns.

Lovelilies2 Sat 16-Jan-16 22:00:48

I meant anTOHNia

villainousbroodmare Sat 16-Jan-16 22:03:03

Oh, then that's what I'd have said. I love it.

AnnaMarlowe Sat 16-Jan-16 22:04:09

I think it's lovely.

The only one I know is in her 60s very bright, strong, serious academic.

I am friends with one, known as Anty. She is incredible.

I would take steps to avoid "Tony" which might be inevitable. Perhaps Annie.

Sophronia Sat 16-Jan-16 22:49:56

Oh, Annie is nice as a nn.

squoosh Sun 17-Jan-16 00:38:31

I like it. I love that it's totally un-babyish.

Reminds me of Antonia Forest and Antonia Fraser. Two good Antonias!

DramaAlpaca Sun 17-Jan-16 00:39:58

Very nice name.

DancingDinosaur Sun 17-Jan-16 00:44:51

Antonia is nice. Anty is nice. Toni really isn't. I think you can get to choose nicknames, or at least the child can. My brother has a longish name that would normally be shortened, but he never let people do that. He ignored people who did or told them straight. Seemed to work.

TheXxed Sun 17-Jan-16 00:48:34

Love it!

mathanxiety Sun 17-Jan-16 05:26:34

I think the standard English pronunciation is An-TONE-ee-a.

I love the name. I love Toni too. But if you don't want a nn then insist on the full name. Nicknames are not inevitable.

IHeartKingThistle Sun 17-Jan-16 05:35:11

It's my name. I like it but find it a bit of a mouthful. Most people know me as the nn op suggested but with i not e. Suits me better. Also hate Toni which my mum was quite upset about!

GoldPlatedBacon Sun 17-Jan-16 10:08:45

I love it!

Lovelilies2 Sun 17-Jan-16 14:56:16

Thank you. Always nice to have the MN seal of approval grin
