Really don't want to pick a name that suddenly becomes really trendy like Sofia or Florence
I have always loved Clara but it's mentioned a lot on here ?
Is it too popular ?
Our list is
Clara
Jenna
Flora
Annabel
Megan

I don't know any Clara's. Like most of your list except jenna (too 90's) and flora (butter). I think Clara and Megan are the nicest.

I love Clara but my name is virtually identical. I only know of one Clara and she is 3.

No way ? Four of them ? I've never heard of any in RL but I don't live in a big city maybe we are too provincial! Ha ha is Jenna 90s? I've again never heard of any Jenna's in real life just in books ! I know people always say oh flora like the butter ! That doesn't bother me .... It's the closeness to Florence that would annoy me I think ?! Worried that Annabel is too main area but maybe all those names are ! Arghhhh I want something a bit different but not too out there ! But also pretty and girly !

Never met one - but then I don't know many babies.

I don't know any and absolutely love it, think it's really classic and timeless. It probably depends where you are as to how popular it is / about to become- and also, how much this actually bothers you. I say if you love it, go for it and forever more avoid these name threads! People are fairly vocal on here Grin

have you any contenders for a middle name?

Well I'm not sure maybe
Clara Megan
Clara Amelie
Clara Kate
Clara Elodie
Clara Elin ?

Maybe it's not 90's it's just that's when I was in school and there were quite a few!

I think most of the pretty and girly names are already popular because their such nice names.

I nearly fell into the trap of naming my dc names that were not popular then I realised the popular names were nice for a reason. Mine have top 10 names but are the only ones in the playgroups we go to and amongst my friends.

The only name from your OP that I've come across on a small child is Annabel.

There's a website that tracks name popularity. Can't quite remember the name now. Will have a think on it.

That's the thing literally any name could become really popular and u can't do much about it ! It's just in my sons class there are like two of each Williams, Harry's, Joseph's and Jacobs and Ava's and it made me realise I didn't want a super popular name for this little girl! Didn't think it bothered me before !

Don't know any Clara's but know multiples of the other names in your lists. Where we are Annabel is particularly popular. Megan running a close second.

I was the other way before I was pregnant I was adamant mine wouldn't have popular names but when I had a gender scan I did a total u turn and just picked names I like.

I always have lovely comments on their names and one of the things I hear most is that it's refreshing to hear proper names Grin as I live in an area with lots of made up names.

I think most of the names you've chosen are lovely, proper names and not as popular as some of the girls names.

Yeh I have a really unusual name altho it's a proper name it's really hard to spell
So I don't want something too out there or u would go for Arianwen or Ariadne ! Which I love but hate having to constantly spell my name !

Why is Clara making me think of Heidi? Was there a girl who was poorly or couldn't walk or something called Clara in the story? Been a long time since I read it! I love all your middle name combos too.

You can see the rise in popularity of Clara on this list. I love the name and would like to take my own advise to not worry if a name may be on the rise (my boys name is on the rise as well!)

Yeh Clara was the girl in the wheelchair in Heidi ..... I also love the name Heidi but as I have naturally really blonde hair and my son does I worry it might be a bit sort of taking the mick?

Oh please use Clara Grin I have just googled the Heidi story and it has made me want to dig out my battered childhood copy for my dd. I am glad for this thread as it has reunited me with a favourite story from my childhood!

(Apologies op for the slightly bonkers thread derail!)

Clara has been an absolute firm favourite of mine since I was a child but I was put off it when naming DD in 2014 because it suddenly seemed to be mentioned everywhere. I now know 2 of DD's age. I think it is increasing in popularity but it is such a beautiful name, I would go for it if you don't mind a top 100 name (guessing it may become that soon), I don't think it will ever be top 10 though.

Yes I was remembering that lovely series they did on TV, bet it's on you tube somewhere!

Apparently there were 284 Claras born in 2012 and in 2014 there were 464 so a fair jump. It's gone from no. 179 to no. 121 in 2 years as well. So not massively popular but it is rising. FWIW, I only know one baby Clara.

Annabel is very similar in popularity to Clara (no. 119). But the spelling Annabelle is no. 53 so the two combined means it's a lot more popular. Sorry for all the name stats, I'm a nerd who loves this website - names.darkgreener.com/# Type in any name and it shows you how many were born each year going back to 1996, and the ranking. It even shows it in graph form so you can easily see the names that have had massive jumps if that's something that really concerns you.

Jenna and Megan were popular a while back so would be surprised if they jumped again. I'd be tempted to go with Flora in your shoes. It's heard of, easy to spell, no massive jumps in popularity and a lot of people are going to be put off due to the margarine so I doubt it will rise.

Oh I used to love the really badly dubbed Heidi series.

Clara is a lovely name.

ThatsIrrelephant · 12/01/2016 19:54

Clara is also the name of the current Dr Who 'sidekick' so it might get even more popular...

Report
squoosh · 12/01/2016 19:54

And it's by far the nicest name on your list.
