Hi all,

Just wondered which of the names you prefer??

Edith
Or
Medeleine

We have a very long list but these two keep coming out top but we can't seem to decide!

Thanks in advance.. Smile

I love them both

If I had to choose, I think I'd go for Edith.

Edith.
Nuff has been said about associations with Madeline. Also there are about a zillion of them toddling around the uK at the moment.

Edith. One of the oldest names we have. Lovely. Also like Edie a lot as a nickname - much better than maddie

Thanks for your replies, while we are on the topic...

Which do you prefer out of:

Seth or Theo

We don't know what we are having!

Madeleine by quite a long way, beautiful name. Although Edith is growing on me, it still has resonances of 'old lady', but the nickname Edie is nice.

Seth or Theo - not much to choose, maybe Theo.

Thabks all,

Gives us something more to think about when we finally make the decision once baby is here. It wasn't until I read back the thread I realised we must love the TH sound!

Sets and Edithmead. Although you could combine (sort of) the girls names and go for Meredith

Obviously not Edithmead that's a bit out there even for baby names!

Iv got an Edith whose just turned one! :-) we love the name! Had planned to use Edie as a nickname but actually for now we use Edith and it really suits her :-)

Madeleine and Theo.
To me - obviously someone who has a delightful little baby Edith will think of it so differently - it is very fusty and dusty. A faded velvet, antimacassar, yellowed lace, moths in a wardrobe feel to it.
Seth sounds to me like a lonesome speech impediment.
Theo says to me a leather school satchel, sturdy red shoes, libraries.
Madeleine is ballet classes, sitting on a café chair swinging your legs, delicate scented golden cakes.

What are the associations with Madeleine? I haven't heard anything negative. Tbh, my first association with the name is the elegant ragdoll from Bagpuss Grin I think it's a beautiful name.

Edith is a bit fusty on its own, but I assume you'd do what all Mums of Ediths do and call her Edie? Which is cute, but it does seem to be approaching Lily levels of popularity, so be aware that there is a risk she may go through school life as Edie Surname Capital Letter.

And Seth is much more classic than Theo imo. All the Theo's I can think of are TV characters - Theo Huxtable, Theo the Chipmunk, Theo Kojak...

Madeleine. Fo' sho!

Edith, to me, is on a par with Bertha and Blodwyn.

Oh, of course. I don't know if many people would make that connection though?

Love both, but Edith is probably my favourite. It's had a bit of a resurgence in popularity I think - Downton?
