Emrys or Huw?

Title says it all really! Love both names, I probably prefer Emrys and DH prefers Huw but we are open to both. Emrys is presumably less well known to non Welsh speakers. My Dad is called Hugh though so wondering if that will cause issues.

Any thoughts much appreciated smile

Huw is lovely, short and sweet and I think works just as well for a grown man, a teenager and a baby - sounds strong and manly but kind and loving. Emrys is nice too, could you have it as a middle name? Or maybe wait until the little one arrives and see which one he looks like? If you get on well with your dad I think using the same name but Welsh spelling would be a lovely idea.

Thanks Peach smile We love Huw because it's so timeless and suits all ages like you say smile I am close to my Dad and I'm sure he will like it. I don't want to upset the IL s though, that's my maim concern with Huw. Otherwise it's definitely my favourite I think smile

Huw! Fantastic name for a cute kid, surly teenager, and distinguished gentleman! biased, me? never!

Both nice but I prefer Huw. Sounds more "solid" somehow.

Emrys.

I don't like the look of Huw.

Huw

nightandthelight Wed 16-Dec-15 17:26:36

Huw seems to be winning out smile

Love both names.

What about Emlyn as an alternative to Emrys?

ThroughThickAndThin01 Wed 16-Dec-15 17:31:12

Huw

Huw

I prefer Emrys.

Emrys. Unless you aren't fussed that everyone will say Hugh rather than Huw. The mum of a Huw I knew was fussed and it became 'a thing'

Emrys <biased>

I should know this but don't: how is Emrys pronounced? Is it tricky for Anglophones?

BackforGood Wed 16-Dec-15 18:20:10

I'm no help - I love them both grin

You'll just have to have another ds next year as well wink

SoWhite Wed 16-Dec-15 20:30:06

I don't know how Emrys is pronounced either. My brain is telling me 'Em-Rees' but I'm sure that that is not correct.

SweepTheHalls Wed 16-Dec-15 20:31:02

Huw is lovely grin

Alisvolatpropiis Wed 16-Dec-15 20:41:37

So

It's Em-riss smile

Domino777 Wed 16-Dec-15 20:42:39

Huw.

Anyone who knows the Merlin story knows Emrys. Huw is an old man name to me.
Different spellings in the family will be so confusing. Why not Hugh then?

EmilySmallwood Wed 16-Dec-15 22:26:03

Emrys

Counttheshadows Wed 16-Dec-15 22:27:10

I think Emrys is a lovely name smile

GreatFuckability Wed 16-Dec-15 22:59:33

Huw and Hugh are pronounced the same.
I prefer Huw. Although I know Emrys is a boys name (I'm a welsh speaker) I think its a bit feminine sounding.

Emrys
