No new names to add, but my sister and I both have Scottish island middle names (Islay and Iona) and we both love them.

I know somebody called Tiree which I think is very pretty and unusual.

BifsWif Sat 12-Dec-15 22:48:57

Is Islay the same as Isla? It sounds lovely!

leaningtoweroflego Sat 12-Dec-15 22:50:18

How about Cara?

fluffygreenmonsterhoody Sat 12-Dec-15 22:51:50

Islay is pronounced with 'lay' on the end, so different to Isla.

I always thought Mull of Kintyre had a ring to it, and Eigg is a lovely wee place too :-D

What about Sula?

It's a tiny island off Rona (Sula Sgeir). It is named after the Old Norse for gannet, so you might not like it for that - although I think they're amazing birds!

Or Tanera (Tanera Mor and Tanera Beag are two of the Summer Isles).

Or what about Eilean which is just gaelic for island?

BloodyDogHairs Sat 12-Dec-15 22:59:50

Islay is very popular in my area.

What about Skye?

I have friends on Islay and they definitely pronounce it without the lay on the end, so it sounds the same as Isla.

Lightbulbon Sat 12-Dec-15 23:01:13

Skye is the most obvious one.

I've heard of girls called Harris if you don't mind a unisex name.

leaningtoweroflego Sat 12-Dec-15 23:02:57

Sula's lovely - but people will think you named your child after Sula on Bing (Cbeebies)

Mind you only parents of children of a certain age will get the reference so maybe no big deal?

I have a friend from the isles who called her DD Vaila, it's a beautiful name.

Ailsa & Isla are also popular.

leaningtoweroflego Sat 12-Dec-15 23:06:13

Helpful comment RiverTam hmm

Perhaps because she fancies a chat about the names too?! A map doesn't give you several opinions at the same time, does it?

Half of mumsnet would disappear if people just went and got the facts off the internet!

DD has a friend named Vaila - v pretty. Islay is definitely pronounced like Isla. Except in Gaelic, where it's more like Ee-la.

Essexgirlupnorth Sat 12-Dec-15 23:10:23

I forget I am named after a Island (I am a Ailsa) though my dad named me after a bus named after the island

thequickbrownfox Sat 12-Dec-15 23:13:29

Islay is pronounced the same as Isla. Vaila is beautiful! Sula is lovely too.

thorshammer Sat 12-Dec-15 23:16:44

I always liked Paisley as a name but think I live a bit close to it to ever use it. Also like Iona and Rona.

Themodernuriahheep Sat 12-Dec-15 23:16:46

Canna
Danna
Shona
Eriska
Fara
Hirta
Jura
Lamba
Mingulay
Rona
Samphrey
Shillay
Shuna
Ulca
Vaila
Vementry
Calva
Damsay
Staffa
Kilda
Benbecula
Eriska
Seil
Maree

I myself would go for Kilda, where was a saint, or Maree. Personally I think Skye overused like the other ones you mention, so didn't include it above, and think Arran, Bute, Mull, Uist, Lewis and Harris more suitable for boys.

What about non island Scots names?

Christian
Kirsten
Christie
Jean
Jeanie
Elspeth
Ishbel
Mamie
Thomasina
( any man's name +ina)
Merran
Mirran
Euphemia/Phemie
Meg
Lorna

Lots of lovely ones, and the ones above are really ( other than Ishbel which someone will tell me is the genitive in the Gaelic but they should gave told my friend's west coast parents that then ) are lowland, or non Gaelic. Lovely Gaelic ones too

Eigg Sat 12-Dec-15 23:18:44

I have a friend called Shuna, gorgeous name.

BikeRunSki Sat 12-Dec-15 23:22:34

Ailsa, lovely, lovely name. Would have been dd's but everyone said it's too close to my name.
