I read this in Sarah Dessen's book and it's the baby's name. I love it!

It's also in Midsummers Night's Dream.

Is it too out there or could it be a grower?

It's not awful but it sounds a bit lispy to me. It's also from Ovid - Pyramus & Thisbe - and is tragic as you say.

Am amused at bugrot's piratical comment too and can't stop hearing it that way now!

I knew a vair posh one at university - everyone (including tutors) assumed she was called Frisbee. Don't hate it, but suspect the owner would be in for a lifetime of puzzled looks!

It was on my list for DD2 and I love it. In the end it lost out to a name which wouldn't suffer so being spoken in DP's estuary twang (which includes pronouncing soft "th" sounds as "f"; Ethel lost out for the same reason). Some might say she had a lucky escape

I quite like it. It does come across as being very very posh, though, kind of posh eccentric. No-one would bat an eyelid at DD's school which is fairly liberal-lefty arty-farty middle-class .

I think it's awful, sorry. Unless you are incredibly posh and the child will never have to mix with anyone who isn't incredibly posh or ever be in any situation where people might mock her.

Spam She saw the funny side, and was so posh it didn't really matter what anyone else thought - her social circle included lots of Mungos and Electras, so Thisbe was fairly standard! Outside of that posh arty circle though I'd say it's a no-no.

I'm not sure the cultured nature of the Bottom jokes will be any solace to a 13 year old hearing it for the 2000th time, TBH.

I live in London . I can pronounce Thisbe. Should people in London not call their DC Theo, or Catherine or any other name with a 'th' in it?

I think it is the name of one of cinderella's ugly sisters in some recent renditions - Thisbe and Drizella in the book we have. This would put me off, along with other things mentioned.

I did not read as This be but now it has been pointed out I can only see it like this! Bit like Ianthe which I used to like but after a thread on it can only see as Ian the .

Never heard of it. I would definitely have to ask twice what someone's name is if there said that. With no knowledge of it I wouldn't assume it was posh, just quite random.
