Is this girls name too out there?

I was wondering, would using Esmeralda for a girl be too out there?
According to the stats there were only 14 born last year. It sounds like a really pretty but also elegant and strong name that could potentially work from childhood to adulthood.
I was also thinking you could use the nickname Esme for a more well known alternative if wanted?
Would love to hear you opinions.
Thanks in advance x

Esme is really popular here. I haven't heard of anyone local using the full name but it's a very conservative area. I'm of the opinion that you should give the full name always anyway so that there are options. Margaret not Maggie etc. I like Esmeralda. If you like it go with it.

Makes me think of Victor Hugo's heroine... or of Esmeralda "Esme" Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett's novels!

I quite like it, and it can always be shortened like you said.

I'm not keen at all.

I really dislike it, but then I really dislike esme too and have no idea why it's so popular. It sounds harsh and ugly to my ears.

Esmarelda is very dated and a bit of a mouthful. I don't love esme either.

It's pretty, as is Esme.

It brings to mind the girl in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Sorry but I agree with WorldsBiggestGrotbag.

Esme is very pretty although pretty popular. I know a grown up Esmeralda who loves her name and have always thought it sounded cool. She's always known as Esme though.

If you like it, go for it!

I like it! Would rather see / hear of an Esmeralda than yet another Lily, Evie or Ava.

It's too flouncy for me, but I don't think it's terrible.

I think it's horrible. Esme is lovely though.

One of my favourite names and Esme is a lovely nn. Granny Weatherwax is one of my literary heroines, can't think of a better woman to be named after Grin

I absolutely love it but my mum said it will make people think of hunchback of notre dame...

I really like it. It makes me think of emeralds. And opera singers. And chandeliers. And rich luxurious things. Also Granny Weatherwax.
Esme is also great. You wouldn't mess with Esme.

I don't like it. It makes me think of hunchback of Notre dame too.

I started off calling my bump Esmeralda as a kind of joke with my DP, but it has actually really grown on us. We don't seem to agree on many names, but we both quite like this now!

I have also heard of it being shortened to Merrie as well as Esme.

Love Esmerelda. Villainousbroodmare took the words right out of my mouth.

Weirdly, I hate Esme.
