Hello everyone. So, we are struggling to come up with a name for baby no. 3. We don't know if it's a boy or girl, so need two names. Our children are called Eleanor and James, so I would like something along those lines. We have got a short list of sorts, girls names easier to come up with than boys I find!

For a girl

  • Florence (really like, though not too keen on Florry or Flossy for short and have come across quite a few Florences already)
  • Georgia (love, but worried she would be called George for short)
  • Matilda (not so keen on Tilly or Mattie)
  • Violet (what could you shorten that too?)
  • Leah (pronounced Leeyah)
  • Phoebe

For a boy (considerably shorter list!)

  • Christopher (love love, although recently been put off it slightly by naughty boy in dd class... would that put you off?)
  • Isaac (can't really shorten to anything but Ike I think which I'm not keen on)
  • Lucas
  • Lawrence

Which of these do you think 'fit' best with Eleanor and James? Or can you think of some other fabulous names that would go well? All your help greatly appreciated, I just want to avoid another last minute decision after baby is born!

Thanks ladies. xxx

For a girl, I'm biased but I love Leah. It's my 11 year old's name and she was the only one in her whole primary school.

Out of your boys list I prefer Christopher. It's not used so much now but is still well recognised. I do prefer Christian to Christopher though.

Love Laurence, Lucas and Isaac. Bit meh on Christopher but I wouldnt let the naughty kid put you off. I suggest Isaiah, Paul, Peter, Thomas, Callum, Michael, Andrew.

Don't pick anything that you really dont like the obvious nicknames for.
Florence - grand, met a few in schools. Not a fave though.
Georgia - as above
Matilda - nickname thing again. Don't really like but nothing wrong with the name.
Violet - gorgeous. Vi possibly? Do you really need nicknames for them all?
Leah - nice but popular ime
Phoebe - nice

Suggestions: Laurel, Hazel, Lorna, Liliana, Juliet, Liana, Stella, Rachel, Penelope, Martha, Lauren.

I think Florence sounds really good with Eleanor and James. Harriet sprang to mind, or how about Beatrice, Charlotte or Alexandra.
Eleanor, James and Christopher sounds great to me (and nn Kit is so cool), I also really like Isaac and Lawrence. Or how about Nathaniel or Dominic.

I think Florence or Matilda if it's a girl or Christopher or Lawrence for a boy. All those names sound nice with James and Eleanor.

Or how about Edward for a boy and Adelaide for a girl?

Thank you all for the suggestions so far. I do really like Florence and I suppose she does not have to have a nickname, but it kind of happens doesn't it. I call my son Jamie and my daughter Elsie quite often, so I would imagine I would want to call her something ending in ie as well, hmm tricky!

Christopher is still a goer (despite naughty kid) and I hadn't even thought about Kit for short, I love that! Dominic is lovely too and haven't come across any boys with that name. Martha is awesome too, I do love names with an old fashioned ring to them.

Thanks ladies Smile

Violet (Lettie) and Isaac (Zak)

I have a Leah too, and it would be my top choice out of the names you've picked. My first choice was Hannah but my OH wasn't keen. Out of the boy's names I like Lucas and Christopher - they both seem masculine but gentle.

What about Flora instead of Florence? Not so likely to be shortened.

Violet and Lucas

I think Flo, Vi and zach/Zak could be nicknames that you hadn't thought of.
I think Isaac and Lawrence and then violet and Florence are my favourites.
I know Eleanor's with siblings called rachel, Edward, william. And James with Abigail. But not convinced any are like your likes!

How about Georgina isn't of Georgia? It is more of a 'classic' like James & Eleanor

I really like Lawrence for a boy

I definitely like Flora, rather than Florry or Flossy. Perhaps Flora could be short for Florence. Not one I thought of. Georgina is also really pretty and agree would go quite well with my other kids names. Lawrence still a strong contender too..

Aarggh it's so hard! I will have to try and narrow it down to two names for each gender and then decide which name he or she looks like more when born perhaps? It's what we did for our daughter. Not ideal, but probably the only way if we can't decide beforehand. Hmm

Florence or Flora is pretty.

Haven't heard Lawrence in a long time, really like it.

I love Matilda and Georgia is lovely too, there is a Georgia in DD's year (secondary) and she gets called Geo by all her peers.

I really like Lucas, not overly fussed on your other boys names.
