So.. What impression would you have of a little boy named Phoenix?

Is it a bit naff?

Other names I like are:
Milo
Felix
Gabriel
Sebastian
Caleb

.... But all of these are either vetoed by my partner or already used by close friends recently so I don't feel comfortable using them.

Do you think he would end up with NN Phoe (Fee?)

I've met one, it's a nice name. Genuine first impression was that it was hippy-ish/alternative but that's no bad thing!

Hippyish.

Prefer all your alternatives

Also, he would have a Chinese middle and last name so I'm a bit worried people will make an association with Angelina Jolie's boy Phoenix Chi ?

West Coast US hippy, or conceived in Arizona. Or both!

All your other suggestions are boring by comparison OP, so go with your gut. Choose a name you love. There nothing wrong with Phoenix, it's not embarrassing.

A bit naff, yeah. Your alternatives are nicer, I understand you mightnt be using them!

Phoenix chi is Mel b's daughter not angelina Jolies son just so you know Smile

I can only imagine it suiting an adult male who is an actor, guitarist, hairdresser or cartoon illustrator

Less suitable for a computer programmer, tax inspector or farm labourer

I don't actively dislike it but would put your son under pressure to be cool, confident & arty!

Having said that, unusual names are far more common now so in 20 years that may well not be the case and Phoenix probably won't stand out in the way it would for an adult male now

I think of River Phoenix

It's a bit too "celebrity child" for my taste but it's not the worst you could do. I really like all the other names you listed!

Thanks imnottoofussed - My celebrity knowledge is a bit lacking. Hmmm not sure which is the worse connection out of Mel B or Angelina haha

I prefer Felix but Phoenix could be worse.

Already know one (5 months old). Makes a nice change from Alfie/Ben/Sam/Noah etc.

Also know a River, but this River and Phoenix don't know each other! I want to meet a Joaquín next Grin

My cat is called Phoenix, she was named after River Phoenix by someone else. This, and Mel B's child make me think of it as a female name, along with the shortening of Fi.

I think he will spend his life correcting from Felix.

On the whole, I'd prefer Felix.

But I would tell you that I loved his name, as it is a beautiful name!

I know two children called Phoenix - both are girls. To be honest the name suits them but it has fixed it as a girls name in my head.

I know two boys called Phoenix! One of those names that at first I thought 'huh?', but now seems pretty normal. Go for it if you like it.

Just read your list- much prefer Gabriel though!

Interesting about people seeing it as a girls name. That hadn't even occurred to me.

I'm totally hearing the Felix/Phoenix confusion too and there seem to be lots of little Felixes where I live.

I love River too but this was also vetoed by my partner along with Cedar for being too hippyish.

Too commonly used (for boys and girls) to be unusual nowadays so I'd say it's a bit naff. I love Felix though.

I actually love Phoenix! It's my favourite from your list too :)

I'm not personally keen on it - my first impression would be celebrity child (I'd associate it with Mel B) and also chavvy

It's lovely - very cool....although hard to spell for a little one! We have quite similar lists....I've got Jasper and Sebastian on mine too :)
