Thoughts? One of the only names DH and I both love but a few friends have put me off a bit by saying it is the female 'Brian'! Also been told that I'm being too "Kardashian" as both DH and I are B although they are shortened from E and R so I don't think it's really a problem?

Also which spelling- Bryony/Briony/?

I've for a young family member names Bryony and Bry for short and it's a nice name. More unusual than the popular names, don't get many Bryonys about so she'll most likely be the only one in her class or even school with the name smile

Love Bryony ! I alway thought the female version of Brian was Brianna and I'd assumed Byrony was from Lord Byron - but that's just my warped logic

AuntGertrude Wed 21-Oct-15 07:42:25

Bryony.
It's nothing to do with Brian but the name of a hedgerow plant. (There were two Bryony fairies in the Flower Fairy books).
I know a Bryony aged 22. A very pretty name.

I like it... Definitely a flower and not Brian smile

I really like it. And I only know adult Bryonys (and not even that many of those) so I think it will be unusual too. It doesn't make me think Brian.

NotTodaySatan Wed 21-Oct-15 10:59:07

I don't like it.

All I hear is Brian-y which isn't the nicest image for a girl.

I love it. I would use it but have a cousin with the name.

Remember it well Gertrude. "To the glory and the praise of the sweet September days" I don't know if that's from the black or white bryony fairy poem. blush at of all the things being able to quote.

I don't think it's a bad name. But on pondering I suspect it's a bit on the dated side. The similarity to Brian always comes up too.

My friend's daughter is a Bryony, it's a beautiful name. She likes hers shortened to Bee.

ShamelessBreadAddict Wed 21-Oct-15 12:08:19

Love it! Was on my shortlist.

ChipInTheSugar Wed 21-Oct-15 12:10:46

Love it. Also Blythe is a beautiful and underused name.

Lunastarfish Wed 21-Oct-15 14:15:20

I like it, I'd spell it as Bryony but don't dislike Briony

villainousbroodmare Wed 21-Oct-15 17:55:32

Nice.

ashesandfire Wed 21-Oct-15 21:48:59

I think it's very pretty.
I prefer Bethany but I'm biased.

WishIWasWonderwoman Thu 22-Oct-15 03:01:56

I like it.

scrivette Thu 22-Oct-15 03:09:37

Very pretty name and it's unusual so she shouldn't be one of many in a class.

KoalaDownUnder Thu 22-Oct-15 03:56:13

Torn between thinking it's beautiful, and then being reminded of Brian (which is awful).

I prefer Ebony, but am aware that's not a very 'mumsnet' name wink

StrawberryTeaLeaf Thu 22-Oct-15 05:12:14

I love it. It definitely gives me hedgerow connotations rather than thoughts of Brian (!?)

I would imagine Bryony's siblings being called Sorrell, Heather and Sage.

Unfairestofthemall Sun 25-Oct-15 12:45:53

I like my name very much grin id never met another bryony until recently. Only difficulty is that nothing ever has my name on in shops sad

CoraPirbright Mon 26-Oct-15 19:01:19

Love it! And the Bryony fairy was by far the prettiest in the Flower Fairies series!

ChristinaParsons Mon 26-Oct-15 21:08:52

I love briony. It was on my shortlist

tellmeofthetime Mon 26-Oct-15 22:55:08

Bryony is a beautiful name

TRexingInSportsDirect Mon 26-Oct-15 23:05:02

It sounds a bit like a description to my ears, i.e. 'she's not exactly a Brian, but she is a bit Brian-y'. But once you get used to saying it all the time, like if she was a family member or friend, I can imagine that wearing off and she'd become 'Briony' instead of Brian-y eventually.

It's a lovely name grin
